Title: Websites
Post by: Kev Loomes on November 18, 2008, 11:02:12 pm
Been having a nose round and looking at CC websites as I'm a bit sad and find it quite interesting :P

What is the best site you've seen to date? www.cleaningforceuk.com/ is the best I've seen so far (apart from Shaun's of course).

Do like the layout and overall look, something i will hope to emulate (not copy  :P) in near future   ;D

It matters not what it looks like - its the revenue it generates that counts ???

Kev,

You'll probably laugh at this. You may even have been in the same position.

I am currently involved in the development of a (non cleaning related) site. For the first time ever, I am working alongside a "proper" web designer.

I am doing the copywriting and SEO. He is doing the graphic design, CSS and database integration.

You would not believe how two people could approach a project so differently!

He starts off doing a fantastic design on Adobe Photoshop. He then "slices" this image into chunks and re-assembles them in CSS in Dreamweaver for the website.

I hate to admit it but his designs look brilliant.

His approach is..... "here's the site. Now go and put a few words in to fill it up a bit"

I'm writing search driven advertising copy, laid out how I want it to work for humans and search engines.

My approach is... "here's the copy. I want it laid out like this. Now go and make it look good".

The site owner, watching from a neutral viewpoint, thinks it's really funny.

The truth is that a decent site needs all of these elements. Can a site look "too professional"? . My opinion is that it's better to look too professional than too amateur.

Garry.

ps Great thread

Interesting thread, I think identifying the person or  people you are trying to communicate
with is crucial, then get some feedback, try and combine design and content with this in mind. It has
to be user friendly.  :)

Shaun,

I actually showed your site to a prospective client as a good example. Why?

To me it's a great balance between professional and friendly. Here's his E mail reply...

"Like it,
Friendly but still retains a professional air. "

Look at it from a customer's point of view. At some point you are likely to be working in their home or business. They want to "know" you before they employ you.

Gary

Im lucky in the respect that I just build to how I want them myself and then do the seo. If I muck up I just smack meself round the chops ;D

Shaun

Your site is graphically very good for a start. I have a thing about that and yours is spot on. It is also easy to understand and you have a different twist on the 'show your face to the clients' aspect - by standing there waving! it comes accross that your a friendly sort of chap.

Although shauns site is very good and pleasing to the eye, why is there a few sites out there that look exactly like his. I would be looking to be different to everybody else. Is this a template or something?

Marks sites do have a nice feel, I like Shauns, Spencers and Chris.

Maybe I've been a bit harsh above.

It has to be one of Mark's sites.

The CSS layout tags are identical.

Maybe the unique link that also appears on Shaun's was left on by mistake?

I am quite happy with mine, although I am adding another 6 pages soon. The layout is pretty easy to follow and the colours are pleasing on the eye. I believe that you cant go wrong with blue and yellow.

Mike

I used a combination of fireworks and photoshop! Not quite as complex as mine www.carpetknights.co.uk but have worked hard on the code of the tiling site to get it xhtml 1.0 strict  which was a pain because everytime you add something like the gallery the code isn't strict so you have to work it out and do it yourself properly.

Kev

The colours of the site are predominantely blue and gold which are their company colours so to add some extra colour to the homepage we added the slideshow, which for a company of that type fits well and he has some good examples of work there to show off. It does repeat so if you want to get the popcorn you can sit there for aslong as you like, knock your socks off!  ;D
