Title: Advertising : what a pain.
Post by: ftp on November 05, 2008, 07:13:48 pm
Have several adverts on the free sites and yell .com but the kind of people tend to be the sort i don't want, you know - come back after christmas! I ask "are you after a one off clean?" their reply is "depends how good you are, if your good we might use you again!" Most of them start the conversation with "we used to have a window cleaner but he doesn't come any more" Another one was "can you clean my bungalow? - thirty mile round trip for one  ::) Got one today - "half past ten on Saturday morning please!"
It goes on.  ::)

Charge double for the 1st clean, this will stop the ones who only want a one off clean and if you have to travel out of your area then charge extra.

I got a call from a chap who is about 4 mile from my house, he is only one house in street, small 3 bed semi, if it was on my round would prob be £7.50 to £10 at best, anyway told him he was ad-hoc job and he agreed to pay £30 first clean, and £16 a month haha, hope i pick a few more up round there!

haha yeah ive had a few of those, my window cleaner doesn't come anymore..

Then say my window cleaner used to charge this when i give them a quote.. (that would be why they are not doing it anymore then!) I leave them with a written quote and a letter advising them why window cleaners come and go - such as not charging enough in the first place, not professional outfits with a proven track record and a willingness to return if any problems or un happy with the clean or even late paying customers.. it opens their eyes! Also makes me look a bit jumped up, but if they are after a monkey then i am not the window cleaner for them..

Ive taken on many a new customer who is happy to pay a bit more, for a professional service and not take on some monkey who charges peanuts, not to be seen till next summer..

i've had the" my window cleaner only charged £..." thing a lot over the years

i say " where is he now?"

they usually say something like,

"i dont' know , have'nt seen him in ages"

my standard reply is

There are a lot of people asking for my letter. I dont mind passing it out, however since most of these are new to the board whom i dont know, please ensure you have filled out your forum profile, and include a link to your website - or advise of FWC or similar membership.

Got caught again today, quoted fifteen for the job. I don't normally charge more for the first clean because i feel it's the fault of the system that it takes so long and not the customers. Anyway, it was a bad one and it took me an hour to get it to my standards (pure water is crap for first cleans imo). Working away and what did i spot laid on the floor? Yes, a nice shiney new for sale sign.  ::)

that is EXACTLY why you need to start charging more for first cleans :)
