I use soap powder, in my vax, and I use fairy liquid in my doctor ;)
you really need to be a little more specific in your questions, as their are so many variables .
I suggest a search will give you a start .

Hi Johnny
Use a good quility machine such as Prochem, Alltec, Ashbys for hot water extraction along with the chemicals supplied by these companies.
Alternatively for dry cleaning HOST or Envirodri do good machines and chemicals. Personally I have used both but prefer the HWE method.
Over time you will find out for yourself which ones suit you but remember that there are many different types of carpet / fabrics to clean and a '1 chemical suits all' policy wont work.
If you are a newbie Prochem and Ashby's do great starter courses and they are free if you buy one of their machines. Good luck
