Title: Over 40's on the pole
Post by: Oakley Windows on October 23, 2008, 05:06:47 pm
This pole is intended for those of you aged 40 and above who use a waterfed pole ofr the vast majority of your work.

So do you ache physically at any time of the day, be that in the morning when you first get up, when you first get out the van, whilst using the pole or at the end of the day?

You ache over 40 whether you use a pole or a ladder. Moreso off ladders my knees where about to give up, then I found out about poles and went on to light c/f poles which I hope will take me into my eighties  8)

If you keep your wallet in your back pocket it acts as a counter balance making less strain on your back muscles.

It depends on what height I'm working, A long row of windows over 30ft, I take a bit of a break after doing about six of them, I don't mean stop working, I just do the first floor windows with a lighter pole.
I can use a standard Harris pole all day without aching, I am aching right now though, I stepped back to pull my hose off a fastner and forgot about the step behind me, I ended up flat on my back, hence the ache.
 I'm a right old git 66.

For those of you who're knocking on a bit, try taking a glucosamine supplement; Tescos sell it.

Wor Lass takes it, she's a runner, I take it when I remember and my vet even suggested my dog take it (he gets a bit stiff and slow in the mornings).

Also, make sure you're well hydrated; plenty of water; apparantly if you're dehydrated, your joints are less lubricated and suffer more wear 'n' tear.  I read this in a running mag.

Funny you should mention that I was getting nowhere with it until I added Honeygar cider vinegar to my daily intake of it. Ranulph Fiennes the explorer swears by it. My arthritic knees Fenural arthritis and my frozen shoulder are under control and improving by the day.
You have to take everything long term, its true what you put in is what you get out etc.

I'm nearly 40 just a few months to go.

I aches when i wake up in the mornings but after an hour or so at work i'm fine.

Then about 3pm my back will start aching i then go home due to having back problems for the last 6 years i'm not taking any chances.

I've not heard or experienced this from glucosamine!  I believe it's a natrual substance derived from shell fish shells.

What you're describing sounds like 'Stella abuse', I'm talking about glucosamine.

The "magic bullet" for bad backs is in fact the corect excercies, try a JJB sports "Bean" and some oesteopath reccomended backs excercises for the rest of your life. I have a prolapse spine  :)

i have a dodgy disc but it was done 8 yrs ago
the pole does aggravate it more than trad did but the move to a van mount has helped alot (no more barrels  ;D) worst thing for me is neck ache from looking up. Get it while working and then sometimes get tension headaches in evening
alcohol usually sortsthat out tho :)

I'm on too much codeine to ache.
Over half my work is high level work so I invested in carbon poles at that height to save wear and tear on my body and to do the work quicker.
Lower work is hybrid poles.
Fibre glass poles....no chance....let the youngsters buy the bargain poles and save their money for more important things like beer and Fri/Sat nights as they don't worry so much about their health as they think they are invincible whilst they have no ailments.
Look after your health, if you don't it will catch you up sooner, rather than later in life.

Paul

I will look into one of those JJS sports bean jeff.
I had an op on my back 6 years ago as i had two damaged disks.
Now arthritus has set in on my lower spine and does give me some jip from time to time.
I do the back excercises i have a sheet from the physio with all the excercises i should be doing.
But window cleaning itself seems to be pretty good for my back.

Heat cushion with beads inside are good for arthritic pain. Throw the heat cushion in a microwave for 2mins then apply to discomfort zone on body......works wonders :)

Most studies involving humans have found that short-term use of glucosamine is well-tolerated. Side effects may include drowsiness, headache, insomnia, and mild and temporary digestive complaints such as abdominal pain, poor appetite, nausea, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, and vomiting. In rare human cases, the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin has been linked with temporarily elevated blood pressure and heart rate and palpitations.

Theoretically, glucosamine may increase the risk of bleeding. People with bleeding disorders, those taking anti-clotting or anti-platelet medication, such as warfarin, clopidogrel, and Ticlid, or people taking supplements that may increase the risk of bleeding, such as garlic, ginkgo, vitamin E or red clover, should not take glucosamine unless under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Since glucosamine supplements may be made from shellfish, people with allergies to shellfish should avoid glucosamine unless it has been confirmed that it is from a non-shellfish source. The source of glucosamine is not required to be printed on the label, so it may require a phone call to the manufacturer.
