When doing direct marketing and you want to target a specific area, as its much better to personalise the letter, has anyone found a method to get names for the addresses you wish to target ?
Any online companies you can recommend?
Are there any free methods? appart from going through the entire phone book from A-Z which could be a little bit long winded withouit a name.

For domestic or commercial prospects?
You can buy a copy of the edited version of the electoral register from your local council, they should be able to supply it in .csv format so you can sort the list and mail merge from it. Only problem is if there's 4 people registered for a household you don't know who to address the letter to, and you have to manually pick the extraneous ones out... but if you know a little area or a particular road where you want to pinpoint direct mail to, it's got to be worth it. Last time I bought the list it was about 100 quid plus VAT.
Some of the chaps who posted in my thread about register search may have some better options.
A free option for commercial prospects.... search yell.com for particular business types, then copy/paste the page into a plain text file, then copy/paste into an excel workbook. I had a little play around once and built up a little list like this for specific local businesses. Takes bloody ages though :(

We are members of the local Chamber of Commerce, all of the local businesses are listed including contacts. ;D

Paul - Gary sent something to me a while ago... yes mate it had a quite a few contacts in there I didn't already have. Forgot about that actually tbh!!

If I remember rightly you can even have e mail addresses. Choose what market sector of domestic custy's you want i.e. by what they earn how old they are, male or female, where they live (what postcode) etc etc etc.

Just think paul most people that get d mail through there letterbox ends up in the bin mate..

have you tried Maketing File, did you get any customers from using the data you got? Im thinkin of aiming at wealthy 50+, want to see if anyones got any good results from it before i spend my money :D

Direct marketing, This is something am not too bad at but e-mail I dont know.
However ive been putting the D/C Pitches together for the 5 different properties we domesticly
Clean, its had a good response upto now.
Face to face seems to be a good 1st contact but in a passive mannor.
the e-mail thingy is one of those lots and lots for a lil return but im just guessing at that , I dont read most of mine unless im expecting it , but thats just me.
never used inter-web till 15months ago so i might be on my own when i say all this bout e-mail
The tele-can is good with existors - Just fine tuning the offer (GIMIK) Part .

Agreed, most email addys are out of date or just ones people use for spam. If you were to get their direct email addy, they would like i do, just bin it without reading it unless they knew who it was from, especially if selling them something.
Go direct with face to face, or personalised mail - as i do read anything thats comes to me, but most ends up in the bin.

Sorry Chris, it was a few years ago now and I seriously cant remember! I think it also probably depends on the type of material that is being sent to them?

Just build your own list.

As Mike says, build your own. Marketing your own clients (if you have any) is the most profitable and cost effective way to run your business....as long as you regard them as clients and not customers ;)
Building this list over time with new clients being added, is the only way to go 8)

I was thinking more about running comps, giving away relevant info etc that your ideal Clients would go for. So your list is qualified with potential customers.

I have not been recentley but you used to be able to read Electoral Registers at Libary.
If you were quick you could get away with phot Copying it.
If not take A4 pad write down name house number
Archdale Street
1 Brown
2 Jones
3 Smith
4 Casper
5 Carrot
6 Bean
7Wilson
If in doubt you could use M's Brown
But I would experiment with
Letter Type with No Envelope and Just
Dear Resident of Archdale
We were working for Mrs xxxx etc versus adressed envelope type offer
You may find time required to do envelope plus extra cost does not justify response
ie by not specific you can deliver a lot faster.
And then use referals and other means as Mike has suggested to build mailing list

all you need is the disk from the site that i posted it has all the names on the Electoral Register. all you do is type in the address and it gives you all the people at that address on the role then you just pick the lady of the house and your away.
