You could have drilled all the way through using a longer and much thinner bit, this would have given you a pilot hole were you could have drilled from underneath through he chassis.

You can still do it this way with a longer thinner bit, just make sure your bit is central when you go through the hole from inside your van, once through, again you can use this smaller hole as your pilot hole and drill the chassis from underneath the van. HTH

Do you have a toolstation or screwfix near you? if so they sell longer bits.
Or you can try a electrical wholesaler who sometimes sell a drill extension bar, You just slot your drill bit into the extension and tighten the little screw.

I wouldn't expect B&Q or any of the diy outlets to sell them or longer drill bits.

How short is the drill bit your using? You may be able to put the drill into your chuck, so that the tip of the drill bit is just held in the chuck by the skin of its teeth, tighten the chuck really tight and drill from the inside the van.
Keep checking below on the chassis were your expecting the drill to come out and you should see a little dimple appear, once you see that you have the right place to drill the hole from below.

Keep me uptodate on how you get on  ;)

If screwfix don't have a longer bit (I'm sure they will) then see if they have the extension bar.
