I've been watching a programme tonight which makes me wonder about all the concern about the Green issues and Saving our planet.
Seems that we have Super Novas out in space exploding at the rate of one per second and if one of them explodes within a number of light years of us, we've had it. We're apparently bombarded constantly by Cosmic Rays, from these explosions, which are capable of changing our planets weather.
These Super Novas, by the way, are NOT just big rocks, they are as big as 20 times bigger than our sun.
Rather makes us seem like very small fry in the scheme of things.
Oh.............forgot to mention, one could obliterate us at any time, no warning, just bright light and curtains :o :o

I seen on a programme the other day, they said if the moon takes the wobble out of our spining earth, if it were not for the moon being there we would have extreme weather like hottest summer to artic conditions the next day!

I have taken a "greener" approach to my business activities for quite a few years now. As many of the more senior forum members will recall, it started out not for the obvious reasons.
In 1998 I had cancer. Why me? No family history of the illness. Not overweight, don't smoke, almost tea total, grew up on a farm and have always ate healthily. What could have caused it? The only thing I could think of, apart from bad luck, was occupational. In those days, One Step was newish and the safer option for me. Along with others, with encouragement notably Dave Ingram, I made it work for me. My logic was that I couldn't drink most of our cleaning solutions without harming myself. One Step was from food grade components and I was told that whilst it was safe to drink, it tasted foul.
The industry has moved on, more "green" products are available and the one I now use for most of my work is made from 4 vegetable products plus lactic acid (from milk). My perception is that it is safer for me.
Even so, no chemicals are safe. Even water can kill you. Forget about saving the planet with eco friendly products. Save yourself. You're the most important person in the world. People will save the planet, not a vegetable based washing up liquid.
BUT. If you can turn this growing fear for the planet's well being to your advantage and earn a little more profit for yourself and your family well, there's nothing wrong with that. It's called Good Business.
SAFE and happy cleaning :)

Ken,
I,ve been using DFC on just about every job for about 3 weeks and am well pleased.Apart from the 'safe' aspect its a really good cleaner.Wish I had started using it the other year when it was recommended to me at the LM day at Wolverhampton.

Totally agree with Ken
A few months back when I first joined this forum, someone posted a thread (think it was Simon) " Has the bubble finally burst" all about green cleaning M/S, the post attracted lots of replies, all of which were arguments about which product, performed the best - the harsh cleaning vs the M/S, I was amazed that nobody ever mentioned the benefits to the cleaners health, which is the main reason I chose to go this route, I am no eco warrior.

i smoke
i drink (viking lager for the man on a budget)
if its not fried with cheese on it i won't eat it
i'm overweight so my bum looks big in anything.
i have far to much sex, but not sure if thats bad for you or not.
anyway i'm beyond saving so bring on the powerburst with citrus boost.
sod the planet, my extra green taxes should sort that out otherwise why have them.

You are missing the point. You are not saving the planet or yourself, you are adapting your service to your customers needs.
Each Client is different.
ECO=£££ just like any beyond basic service you can offer your clients.
Demographically who does eco? OK you get the odd hippie pauper, but in the main it's those who can and will pay above the norm for what they think is important. Don't argue with people who want to throw money at you.
Read some of Doug's or Pete Sweeney's articles.

If people are happy to clean with 'harsh' products then that is their choice ............... customers considerations have to be taken into account and that would be their choice ....... may make them choose another CC though :o
Anyone wishing to stay with traditional chemicals, then i salute your stand ........................... pass any eco enquiries on to us 'greenies' ;)

Derek
I had you down as old school. ;D
Chris, have you done any eco articles online to get your rankings up?

Sometimes it's amusing to follow threads and find out how big a gulf exists between the various individuals in an industry.
Some are wholeheartedly and energetically adopting the ECO policies which may, or may not be based on fact, or results of research, or might just be marketing, targeting the public who want to, or are being made to feel, they want to be more ECO friendly.
For every positive argument in favour of ECO products a negative argument always comes along to negate any benefit, usually citing the cost of producing the " safer " products, which can be much more wasteful of resources than older products.
So in reality, what's more ecologically friendly and considering the miniscule amounts of product used in carpet cleaning, does it really matter, is it measurable in any drainage system, or in the outflow into the sea.

Whats a champagne supernova

A bloody good song when you have had a few. ;D

So which is the best ECO products to use if you run a truckmount??

I am concerned about my health using traditional chemicals. I would love to use microsplitters on every job but dont think they are good enough.
Does the forum think that traditional chemicals are affecting our health. Since i have started the job i think my sinuses have gone to pot.

why are you concererned about todays chems ive had that stuff hanging round me for 35 years (all my life) and bits havnt fallen off me yet ;D
-
Chems have been around for decades and I think by now if there was a link to illness then it would have shown.
But the newer technologies well we will see. Just cos it's made of plant doesn't mean it's not harmful. But I think we will live. ;D

Even our local council think nothing about dumping waste water in the streets. Took these pics in Elderslie.

Just be sensible whatever you use. I've watched lots of people mixing up chemicals in a bucket with there hand. Also know one cleaner who was told to use an enzyme based pre-spray on every job. It has cattled his chest. These products are all safe to a degree as long as they are used sensibly and to the instructions. There are far worse things under your kitchen sink or in the garden shed in my opinion.

Anybody used the new Natural products from Prochem featured in the new Cleaning Specialist?
Any good?
www.prochem.co.uk/natural%20range.htm
-
Because a product is claimed to be natural, Green or Eco-Friendly, it doesn't mean that it is necessarily safe in all aspects. It can still de-wax the skin leading to iritation or worse. It can still be an iritant to the respitory system.
Many of the more toxic substances on our planet are natural. Just pick the wrong fungi, upset a Black Mamba or argue with a Peruvian Indian to find out what's really toxic in the natural world :o
You should apply ALL the same cautions and safety procedures to both traditional and "Green" products.
Without naming names, there are traditional products praised by many on CIU that cause me considerable respiratory distress, but have no apparent effect at all on others.
My advice would be, first look after Number One. There's only one of you. Then find the safest products possible that achieve the desired results. There's plenty of scope for both traditional and green products.
Finally, always read the sales blurb carefully. If a product is claimed to be, for example, "Greener" or contains"more bio-degradeable ingredients" etc. etc. etc. etc. then that doesn't mean it's green or eco friendly, just less traditional chemicals than before. Even claims such as "100% biodegradeable surfactant" could mean that it still has, for example, traditional chemicals as dyes, perfumes, preservatives etc. etc. ALWAYS READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY and ask yourself questions as to whether you are reading the whole truth.
SAFE and happy cleaning :)
