Don't know if anyone else has had the same thing recently but it seems like the economy is finally getting to my customers.
Went out today and did 4 offices all okay in fact one had a new car so safe there. Then onto 3 houses to loose 2, nobody says it because of money but when the husband is around in the middle of the day it's a bad sign. One of them assures us that it's not us doing a bad job but still can't bring himself to say he's out of work.
I'm now starting to think that oap's are the best custy's to have when the mrs does a block of 4 flats all at a fiver each and all oaps to be told that one of them has got a pole thing and will be cleaning them from now on.
So at the end of the day I'm 6 custys down totaling 38.50. Not high prices but all together a bit of a sting.
Simon.

I'm starting to like the OAP's too.
Before they were a bit of hassle, and low priced,.. now they're the only ones that pay cash, and sometimes even pay for their neighbours too.
I haven't lost any custies yet,.. but the SAE's are getting later and later arriving,.. I've an absolute fortune outstanding at the mo.

few im not the only one then. its getting ridiculous how long people are taking to send stuff in this made up recession that people have made for themelves

-
I lost one over the weekend, an estate agent , his house and 2 offices, I wasnt that bothered, plenty more fish in the sea
-
I have noticed that the SAE sometimes seems to be taking a while.
Before long we will be back out collecting ;D
-
I have lost 4 this month, low priced ones thank goodness, did nearly lose 2 high priced ones but managed to put them onto 8 weekly.
-
I lost one today as i was using WFP she didn't like it saying it was damaging her wooden sills so i have been doing downstairs by hand for the last 6 months.
Today go there o i won't need you any more i have found a ladder window cleaner.
I use ladders also but not this house due to sloping roofs.
But the other window cleaner is a new chap starting quite a few of my customers have told me he has been knocking.
So he is welcome to her.

We've been experiencing the same thing on this side of the pond. My service area however is a University town and has a big university hospital and clinics as well. That adds up to a self generating economy for me. They just keep building new subdivisions and nobody seems to notice any slow down. Other guys over here however are beggining to feel a little nip.
-
hey mr squegee well come to our world in britain from iowa USA i did not know people are interested from there what we do in here thanks anyway and all the best
-
Not lost any yet, but not gained any either (waiting for my new flyers to arrive to go canvassing)
Even got paid finally an £50 outstanding, i was about to write it off! One of my customers has now gone to every 3 weeks rather than every 4.
My missus is getting a new PT job, to help pay the bills, she worried that i might lose customers. Just have to see how things pan out.
-
I have been waitng for this to happen, but work has been streaming in.
This is one job cofirmed today, and have picked up another one about 3 times the size.

Christ its going to take a while getting all those pencil marks off ;D
-
that comment made me laugh for the first time today ;)
-
I've just had a letter saying my electricity is going up 29%, how can they justify that. I'm sacking my window cleaner, me ;D
-
i dont think the recession is as made up as you think, the banking disaster is the worst thing to hit this country financially since ww2, the ripples from it in everyday life are just starting....
-
Getting a lot of people comtemplating stopping over winter. I think once this spell of good weather has gone and the clocks change, things are going to get alot worse, especially with xmas round the corner.
-
Lost a commercial today... a £50er :-\ an engineering firm that went bust
Got a phone call today to quote for one of the biggest houses in the village ;) ;)
I don't think it will be £50 though !!
its all swings and roundabouts
-
I had a £40er switch from 6 to 12 weekly today but in the past few days have picked up some £10 -= £12ers which more than balances it up. I don't normally do 12 weeklies for jobs under £50 and I was tempted to offer the less frequent service at the higher price. However, the price is a decent one so I decided to swallow on it. Maybe £40 will be my new bottom line for 12 weeklies (until someone else decides they don't want it done so often). This could yet be a good business move if I get the others in the complex through it.
-
Seem to be keeping the £10ers ok, but bigger ones seem to be pushing for longer intervals. I suppose lashing out £40 every 2 months hurts these days.
-
I lost loads in the first half of this year. Replaced them with better ones but it has been a real struggle to get decent priced replacement customers.
I have never paid for advertising in 10 years window cleaning because of recommendations from word of mouth, but thought it time to bite the bullet and cough up £600 for some advertising to make sure I have plenty of work for the next year to come.
Times are getting hard IMO but maybe I'm just unfortunate because of where I live.
-
Only lost one in recent months. Still picking up new ones nearly every working day. If I get a bit bored I do a bit of door knocking.
Recession hasnt bitten here yet, but I do expect it to as the media are stirring it up and putting on specials re how to save money on household expenditure.
I am sure this is all some sick ploy, how do so many big banks who've been in business for over 100 years all go tits up so quickly and without warning?
-
went canvassing with my daughter today picked up £140.00 of work in 3 hours , i always target the rural stuff much nicer to work on imo and not lost any maybe i,m just lucky regards alan
-

I havn`t lost 1 customer and we learnt from the early 90`s,if your a WC and your losing work at a silly quick rate your round is so easy to picture in my head.In this current climate the last thing you want is middle aged custies with 2.4 children you will lose tons of work within 6 months i reckon, and my last 2 penneth worth to cheer up people on here is those who have custies that pay through paypal,if i was you i would stop doing it that way at least for the next year or so,it`s so easy to drop the WC an email and tell him not to bother anymore rather than telll him to his face.It might seem like a good quick way to get paid but not the way things are at the moment.

when i started out wcing i defined my ideal customer, its a rich retired individual!!! and the commercials are people who dont want to compromise on quality. I have VERY few customers with children at home. Infact its less than 20!!
-
I even aimed my sign writing at older people, making it with huge lettering, and the phone number over sized. Reason being, my target customer usually is a little hard of sight ( being 55+ and more disposable income ) and very often wear glasses.
-
How many you lose will only determine what type of customer you have and nothing else, all normal income familys on the whole will drop the WC.We are in the process of looking for a new house at the moment and 7 out of 10 of them are being repossesed or in the process, this is the chance your taking when you take on work just for works sake you need to be selective to avoid the constant worry of being dropped.

very true. Unless thing turn VERY bad then people with a "richer" round should be ok.
-
No probs here yet but I'm expecting it on commercials.
However Friday picked up an £12 job and today an £11 job. In amongst the rest of one of my compact ex council house estates.
-
We have lost a few over the last 2 months, but have picked up treble that so we are not worrying yet...... picked up 4 today while we out working...superb ;D
Also had another w/cleaner ask us if we would be interested in taking over his round, so interesting times ahead hopefully... ;)

SAGA window cleaning, that could turn out to be a good idea.
I lost two just yesterday, one had moved out owing me £12, the other cancelled saying that there was a run on her window last time, now there may have been, the PVC frames on this estate are chalking on the side that faces the sun. I'm fallible just like every one else, but no verbal, written, or final warning here, one mistake and your sacked.
Imagine their boss treating them like that after 10 years service, they would be screaming unfair dismissal and seeking a tribunal.
I checked her windows after I had done them yesterday and they were perfect.
That's people for you, if you know them well enough and for long enough, they will seldom fail to disappoint you.
-
Just cleaned one for the third time, and lost it at £7-50, because she said "This water pole thing is no good, and you did a rubbish job last time"
Funny that, because halfway through the last time, she was so impressed, she asked if I could go to another part of Stafford and clean her Mothers house - and she didn't comment until I'd finished this time!
So I put this down as daughter cannot afford my price, but pensioner parents can.
Last Week and this week, got two new ones at £14-00p each, both terrace houses, and a Cottage at £16-00p, so bit of a mixed bag, really.

Trouble is, there isn't enough of "your type of work" to go round the whole nation of w'cers. If there was, there wouldn't be a problem, would there? there is only so much cream to go round so many cat's!! People can't just go out & get a full round of "cream" man, think outside your own little world for once! Remember, it took you AND your family YEARS to get what you've got!!! ;)

Because they dont actually have money! The financial sector is based on a virtual world. Working with money they dont really have. When they need the money in their pockets as it wer, and then dont have it, like now, they go belly up.

NWH is right about young families with 2.4 children. Reflecting back on my losses, most of them were young families. Although they were better prices than regular, reliable OAP's, they came with the risks that window cleaning would be one of the fiirst things to be cancelled when budget gets tight.
Luckily for me I have a very wide diversity of customers, areas and types of properties to minimise the risks.
Got caught out once before having 10% of my work tied to one housing association spread out through three council boundaries. Learnt my lesson the hard way and vowed I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket ever again.
I like to keep a nice mixture where possible, but when work is getting harder to find, have to be cautious and maintain sensible prices, otherwise it's a waste of time picking them up.

Customers can just as easily cancel window cleaning by including a note in with their cheque when posting your SAE. It's just as easy for them to cancel by email without the need for face to face communication or by telephone. Paypal won't make any difference if their gonna drop you. I use paypal as it's just another method of collecting payment, especially as banks are trying to get away from issuing cheque books where possible.
-
Asking them to pay through paypal within X amount of days is like badgering them,if they think as soon as you come they only have 7-14 days to pay the bill it will stress them at times like this.I don`t call to often and i never keep on at them to pay the bill for the clean i`m doing,i sometimes say pay me next time if your in a rush or i can leave a ticket.I know some WC`s can`t do this but i can and it`s the way i`ve groomed my work,if the customer is happy i`m happy and if they like i said before trust you they won`t be quick to get someone else at the very worst they should just say can you put me back a few weeks further in your diary.

4 takeaways a week.....Id be about 20 stone if i did that, as much as id like too i have to limit it to quite a bit less than that :)

You wouldn't be a bad custie mainly because you are in business for yourself.
You have to bare in mind that I live in South Devon. It has the second lowest wages in the country. It has three extremes. 1. Well off OAP's who come down here to retire. 2. Second home owners 3.Poverty stricken youngsters who are lucky if they can get a minimum wage job that isn't seasonal relying on the tourist trade.
Then the run of the mill young families who struggle to get by on poor pay in relation to high house prices (on average eleven times their income so most property is rented nowadays by this age group).
Also the small businesses who start up down here mainly in the service sector who are more reliable, except that this credit crunch scare mongering and rise of inflation is hitting us here harder because of lower wages in general compared to the rest of the UK, hence why I'm probably losing more than some of you in better off areas. Most builders around here are really stretching out jobs and are home more than they are working, that's fact, not just an opinion.

i do need to lose weight ???

your not the only one,ive lost about `£150 worth of work per month, so far,and where i was getting about 4-8 calls per month for quotes, thats down to 0-1,it,s hard but try not to let it get you down to much,as long as you,ve got enough to live on thats the main thing, and i,m sure things will get better for all of us....kev

You wouldnt want to live in Penwith in Cornwall then, it has got the lowest wage to property price ratio in the country, the avarage wage actually went down £1.00 last year with nearly everyone on minimum wage.
-
i have 4 take aways aweek, and my buisness is very busy...
LOL.
You're not quite there yet. According to the Royal Family (the Scousers on TV), you're rich when you can afford a take-away every night of the week!
We've had about three takeaways this year, but that's got nothing to do with how much-or-little I earn.

And Cornwall (much as I love the County) is as expensive if not more so than London.
I'm not talking so much property prices, more about fuel, council tax and general shop prices. I filled up my car a few weeks back just outside of Wadebridge for
the return trip to London. 115p per ltr they were charging against Londons average of 110p. I had no choice as they were the only petrol station within miles and miles...so they milk it! And cream tea for 3 in Padstow?...blimey remortgage time!

Even if I only keep my cream work I could manage on 2 days a week to pay my bills. I'm still on a full 5 day a week despite my illness. Don't give up me, quitting's not in my vocabulary. I'm still picking up from word of mouth (slowed down a lot),but want to make sure I've got plenty in a years time. My safest work is my commercial (touch wood), others have tried to pinch it but the owners are sound as a pound as I've done them for so long in general.
Dave I like living in South Devon. Window cleaning gives me access to some private land and views that the general public will never get to see.
-
i prefer to think of it this way, some not all have a window cleaner, usually the ones that don't either aren't bothered or its somethig they just would not pay for. Anyway the ones that could not afford it in the first place would never ask you anyhow, so in my case paying me every 6 weeks not really a prob as long as they don't lose their jobs.
always get more just takes time

what i was trying to say was that just because i have 3 kids and a big mortgage doesnt mean i cant afford a wc at a tenner or £15 a month when i waste money on non essentials like takeaways etc.
i started preparing for this recession in march by leafleting and canvassing and advertising etc... i have lost 3 and about 3 have gone to every 8 weeks since the spring, but since june i have been picking up a steady increace of 3 new jobs a week...i am pleased with this , but i am still anxious about the next few months, and so in november i am going to have another intense leaflet drop , door knock , advertising campaign.... i appreciate that things are bad but we have to search out the ones who have no mortgage or surplus money left each month... ::)
-
lost another one today, but the house is up for sale anyway.
For the first time in 15 years I'm losing more than gaining customers.
I am well over subscribed so can take the hit, I would be worried if I was just starting out though.
-
in the last month,i lost a 5quida 6.50,5,6,5,but this week got two 7quids and a 7,50 and two six quids,so nothing lost realy, one said there were cob webs, other said husband lost job so he will clean them.other said they were still dirty, one got another window cleaner other said i was hit or miss ???
well if you look like you do in your pic i dont blame em! ;D
-
I Managed to go to work yesterday and not loose any, in fact I did a first clean on one. I think that where most of my work is, it's a bit more susceptible as people own expensive houses and travel into London to work. It seems to be the families that I'm loosing more of. cottonbud10 is in roughly the same area and looks like he's lost about the same as me.
I think the problem is enhanced by lots of new wcs starting up and offering to do them cheaper. I'm pretty sure I won't go out of business, but I've never lost customers at this rate before. I had in mind that next year I'd be up on earnings again, but I might actually be down a little.
Simon.

People can't just go out & get a full round of "cream" man, think outside your own little world for once! Remember, it took you AND your family YEARS to get what you've got!!! ;)

We have been suffering a lot of commercial losses here. Gone from crazy busy to just about enough for 5 days a week and no O/T, in about 3 months it seems.
I went back to ladders on a few streets where it didn't go down too well. Great decision, work came flooding back in. I picked the areas where we wern't saving much time ditching the ladders. If things carry on, its going to have to be more widespread though.
