My gross payload is 611kgs.
Am I correct in my belief that 1kg = 1ltr of water.
This would mean that I could increase my 250 tank to a 400 with ease?

No, 400l tank weighes approx 30kg or maybe more thats empty add 400kg on top with water, add cage 15kg ish (but guess you use straps with thinking a 400l tank would be ok for this van, fuel say 40L = apx 40kg you I dont know your weight say 80kg hose 16kg ish, tools ect, 400l tank is to big for a small payload, get a bigger van and be safe and the right side of the law.
Ian

agreed, get a smaller additional tank, like 125litres, or a bigger van.

Of course you could..... just don't fill it ;D

here we go again.
payloads.
you do realise that a 400ltr tank displaces 400ltrs - only actually holds about 360ltrs.

Thanks guys.

I know that you cant fill it, but some forget that the tank fills that little gap if not more ;)

Ian
360kg of water
30kg of tank
15kg of frame
15kg of hose and reel
30kg of fuel
70kg of human
we're only up to 520kg and thats with a full tank of water and half a tank of fuel.
ladders? 15kg
you're still only about 535kg - 76kg within limit with a full tank of water.
-
you could get a second man in there!!
Rob mate - your van will take 400ltrs easily.
but do yourself a favour, get a bigger van, bigger tank, use more water, work faster, make more money.

you forgot to meantion everything else alan, like ladder claps, buckets scrims, spare hose , pumps, battery the list goes on, that van is to small for a tank that size IMO :P
-
Yeah and you also forget that your tank will be empty within 4-5 hours so your payload at 600kg will be down to 550kg within 30 mins then down to 500kg etc etc etc as the day goes on so your never ever over weight and as for right side of the law come on for gods sake....police officers who are road traffic enforcers are not going to stop a small window cleaning van in a town or village pottering about his business. I have a part timer whos a full time police officer and yes he can work for me on a part time basis as hes not bringing his full time job into an uncompromising position and also a customer of mine works for Thames valley firearms unit and hes told me the same. Oh and before i started doing this 6 years ago i used to take a 40 footer into central London everyday of the week now thats where traffic officers are going to be looking for overweight vehicles not a small van whipping about trying to earn a living. And ive had numerous people hit my vans and no insurance company has ever asked me what was my payload weight when it happened so insuranc claims wont be affected. And please dont start spouting onto me telling me " well im taking a risk then" because like i said if you are up to your payload its going to be for the first 30 mins of your working day thats it.
So all you people who want to get a small van with a 400 ltr tank go get one because you'll be fine. Weve got transit's 1000kg payloads and transit connects 600kgs they run perfectly without and loss in power or anything.
I bet the ones on here on about being on the right side of the law are CSPO's hey ..........we used to have them in the fireservice we called them retainers.

Glad you have finished you rant, but I would say to any new person reading this do not listen, and thI hope you are no longer protecting people if that is your attitude of what is safe and what is not. The limits are there for a reason FULL STOP, dress it up how you please but they are there for are safety and as/ or hopefully was a fire fighter you should already know this, have you never been to an RTA to cut someone out from this type of thing ?(I guess not).
Sorry for the outburst but come on, you have had corect safety training have you not/?? ::).
Sitting back down now.
Ian
p.s I am not a CSPO, I being safety minded and you cant how ever much you want to knock that, I am being safe and not giving mis informed info as you have put above( we can all gamble with are life, it is the other people lives that do not ask for it anyone should really be thinnking about, that a little like a firefighter saying its fine to smoke in bed if you only smoke some of it as it will burn out................the more I read this the more I think you have been drinking and are not thinking in your right mind......
Forget the accident, you get pulled and it does happen on way to work , into weighbridge for you, erm sir you are over the limit (FINE) sorry officer I listened to some guy on ciu that told me it was fine as I empty water as I go. Will they wear that I do not think so. Bad info and you should know better m8 coming from your position ::)
My rant over :-X

Load your van up as much as it will ever be and take it to a public weighbridge. Used to be a tenner, probably more now.
Then take away your vehicle weight from 611. That will tell you how much extra you can carry.
-
Hold on have you ever been pulled over in your van and pulled to a weighbridge ? no porbablly not and yes i did goto road traffic incidents ...not accidents ..an accident is caused therfore your claiming liabilty and guess what in the 10 years i was in the fireservice not once...i say it again not once did we ever attend a road traffic incident to a water fed pole window cleaning van that was ? overloaded..it cant happen the informtaion your are spouting on here is WRONG so keep on ranting.People go on hoilday all the time with overloaded suitcases in their cars...........lorries go down the motorways with curtain sides with great heavy pallets behind them you dont really think they are all strapped down do you? have you never seen articulated lorries carying petrol how do you think its stored in there ? huh if that rolls over onto the carriageway where do you think the liquid is...please dont tell me you think its contained in the container..........have you ever seen insdie the lockers on a fire appliance ........do you really think that every piece of equipment is tied down no its all loose ........ill rant on all night now even if it gets me banned.
Ive been on this forum since 2003 way before you so please dont tell me that im telling everyone to drive illegal what i said was you wont get pulled over in your van if your upto your payolad for the first 20 mins of the day because youll be under it by that time and for your information to your quote and i quote.
Forget the accident, you get pulled and it does happen on way to work , into weighbridge for you, erm sir you are over the limit (FINE) sorry officer I listened to some guy on ciu that told me it was fine as I empty water as I go.
What will happen if one of my vehicles is overloaded?
If one of your vehicles is found to be overloaded by an enforcement officer it can result in a prohibition
notice which will prevent the driver from continuing their journey until the weight is corrected. This may
involve the goods being unloaded to bring the weight down or redistributed (in axle overload cases).
Your driver will then be issued with a ‘removal of prohibition notice’ to continue their journey.
In some cases, the driver may be issued with a ‘direction to drive notice’ which allows them to travel to a
specified place to off-load.
-
Ladders? spare hose reel? what for?
You can always keep your fuel tank near minimum to reduce weight, leave your di on your ibc tank and go on a diet. ;)

So far you saying it is fine to overload your van ???
I personally it does not matter to me if you had been here 10 years, what you are saying is wrong, overloading is wrong, you are right that we do it some times, but it does not make it right. With all that time I thought you may have learnt to be safe being a firefighter, I am not picking a fight with you, but come on.... can you see where I am coming from fella.
So as I said before your mis information is wrong being here from 2003 or not

I havnt said its fine to overload your weight i dont even think you know yourself what you mean bu overloading avehicle.
You said at the top of this post NO you cannot put a 400 ltr tank with everything else into a van with a payload of 611 with ease.
Go on then tell me why beacuse i think your getting GVW (gross vehicle weight) mixed up with GAW (gross axle weight) both are completely differerent you cant go by why your plate on the vehicle says you really do have to do what some have allready said and go to a weighbridge to see if you really are over weight, like i said its probablly no but hey what do i know........... i should also imagine youve pettitioned about getting ladders banned right because you think they are also dangerous beacuse hey miliions upon millions of window cleaners are still using them.................. i rest my case........you should go run for local government they need more H&S officers on board

IU was trad for about 8 years, I had a car crash which made me think about safety big time as I was nearly cripled by it, so as for the I hate ladders I dont, the thing that gets me is your a fireman and have total disregard for safety, I know about the weighbridge I was there with one of our vans 2 weeks ago. I said a 400L tank ect in that van IMO is not very safe at all and I still stick by it, I have just been reading your posts, some are very good some worry me a little as to your saftey of you, and if you have staff them more, I prey you do not have a bad crash, worse one of your staff as trying to be clever could well land you in prison. You run your business as you please makes no odds to me, but I like to know full well, My staff and I are safe driving around with large amounts of water on board.
And by the way a bulk head with say 500kgs plus force would not be ok it can kill you in motion.
I see you have gone to guest now, asking honest questions to a fireman in regards to safety with replies like I have had are IMO not good by any means.
Ian
p.s I am not a new window cleaner, and I am only posting because I think what you are saying is wrong.

Has that easy clean been removed?
-
Has that easy clean been removed?
no canceled account I guess, I cant understand the guy being a fireman with thoughts like he posted shock me no end I read his back posts maybe this is why he canceled the account as some again was bad info, I guess no body can read them now.
-
It was rather shocking that someone with a responsible job was so irresponsible in posting what they did.
Yes do what you like for yourself, but dont glorify it, and say its ok to others. :o

my point was this totally, I dont know the guy, but to post your a fireman and then post what he did is shocking to me.
And I will state it again any new person reading this post do not chance what has been written be safe., if not fopr you for the others around you.

ladder clamps - about half a kilo, bucket - well mine weighs about the same as a pencil, scrims - get real, pumps - about 1kg each, battery - 15kg (for a good sized one)
come on Ian - a small van will easily take a 400ltr tank.
By the way - what you all doing carrying ladders?

access to those with balconies, inspections etc.
-
fair enough but I wouldn't be bothered with that - balconies, either push the pole through or forget it.
inspections- custy can let me know.
