Title: booking in work
Post by: Mike Halliday on October 09, 2008, 08:07:21 pm
anyone have any funny quirks when it comes to booking in work?

I never clean suites on a Friday or after 1pm, I won't do a single room as a first job of the day.

I always try and book jobs in a set order BIG-Medium-small

so usually its a suite and some carpet at the start of the day (8am) the next job will be a T/L & HSL then any single rooms tagged onto the end of the day.

most days follow this pattern.

how about you?

I alway book suites as the first job of the day if I can . I hate doing them later in the day for some reason.

There's some mixed up people around, I do work in the order it comes in and place it together with the area I will be working in.

Suites always cleaned before the carpets and it's not just because it makes sense to keep my knees dry but because it's the harder work.

Always try to book jobs on a geographical basis.

Usually make first job 9.30am and often make it the furthest from home.

Always try to book jobs round the corner from home as last job of the day.

Sometimes I will do a job very near to home first as I can then avoid commuter traffic then 2nd job is easier to get to at the other side of the city.

I never book anything for first thing on a Monday unless I'm forced to!

I'll always book suites in first thing, not for my own reasons but purely because it allows maximum time for drying before the family get home.

I'll always fill my morning slots first and then add on work to the afternoons on a geographical basis, so I can either stay in one area or do a logical round trip.  If I don't end up filling the afternoon I'll either be putting a few leaflets out or doing some desk work... or heaven forbid I'll be having a couple of hours off!

I tend to have Mondays off now, work Saturdays instead (which I havent done for years).

I consider it a perk of being self-employed Shaun.  Why the hell would I voluntarily subject myself to the horror of Monday morning rush hour if I don't have to?!

I work plenty of other hours when all the office monkeys have gone home to cry into their microwave meals.  I don't feel the need to join the rat race, thank you very much :)

And yes I do sometimes go out to a quiz night on Sunday evenings but not really a night on the lash!

If someone desperately needs me for a Mon morning I'll do it just after 9 if it's very local, or book it for 10-ish if it's a bit of a drive.

does anyone else start at 8am?  I tend to leave the house at 7.15 go to the coffeeshop have breakfast then go to my first job, never bothered by rush hour traffic and I get a good start on the day.

Hi Mike
Glad you're working hard, it sounds like you've got it well sorted, i wish i could be that organized.
I usually get up about 6.30 take the wife to work, walk the dogs and do my own thing starting y first job a about 9.30am. (missing the traffic) :)

Leave just before 7am to miss traffic into London. Prefer 30-60 minutes with paper and coffee, rather than being sat in tailbacks!! Starts are 8 - 9.30 generally but normally finished most jobs before noon then maybe survey on way home and on Xbox 360 by 1.30pm. Leave paperwork till 4ish, when i finish off days calls/bookings etc.
BlackBerry is a godsend as can return email enquiries straight away ........... people seem to appreciate efficiency as it carries "Message sent via BlackBerry device" in signature ..........impresses people that they get immediate response on the move.

Mr Dvae
that's how I got into the habit of working early, I used to have to walk the dogs then take my son to school. When he could go on his bike and he walks the dog on an evening I found I had a lot of time spare in a morning so i started telling customers I book my first job at 8am, no one minds ( especially OAPS who get up really early anyway)

your paranoid mate.
i was doing a block of flats on a sunday at 9 in the morning, in a court yard surrounded by flats 4 storeys high, really thought someone wpould come out and complain. but they didnt, not even a curtain twitch. wagons thunder through streets all day. council bins smashing glass bottles and councils cutting grass. up until i did the flat job i was like you, always thinking i was too noisy and people wouldnt like it. did a posh hall and gardens house on a sunday once and worried about that, the neighbour came out and i thought ayup, ere we go, he said, when youve finished can you come round and quote me for a full house, did his the sunday after.
i bet no one has ever complained about the noise to you.
i still worry though.

Yes did 2 nights at a retail store last week.
Couldn't start till 10pm so worked through till 8 next morning.
Arrived home to the sound of angle grinders going all day at the house that backs onto mine.
Doing 3 nights next week as well so should be fun as there building a large extension.
Don't like starting before 9.15 for the traffic.
And I hate doing 3 piece suites.

Legally I'm not sure what the decibels have to be but 7.30 is classed as a reasonable time to start in built up areas, I know that you can't sound your car horn umtil that time also.
