Title: Advice on web hosting
Post by: Mike Osbourne on October 05, 2008, 12:00:57 pm
My 1&1 account will only let me build 2 projects (websites) at a time. After some time delving of course it turns out they want more dosh off me.

Thinking ahead I will need 4-5 sites up and running but do I really want to be tied in at £15 a month with 1&1.

ps I'm not mega technical.

Mike,

I've got a business account with 1 & 1 for about £ 10.00 a month.

I've had a few problems (like forgetting to tell me they stopped using Frontpage extensions, which resulted in being unable to publish for a while). Overall though, they seem OK.

That £ 10.00 gets me 4 gb of web space. In layman's terms, that is room for about three and a half thousand average carpet cleaning sites. By "average", I mean about half a dozen pages with a few photo's and graphics. Even if you had a few videos (assuming they were FLVs...flash video files, which is what they use on Youtube), you would still be way under your allowance.

I'm not sure about the sitebuilder aspect as I build mine using Microsoft Expression Web (before that, Frontpage). It might be worth getting a cheap web design programme and then upload them yourself as and when necessary. That £ 15.00 a month seems way over the top for what you need.

Garry.

Have a look at these it seems that you get unlimited free hosting with every domain name you buy from them

Goron, I've checked that out and it does look good value.

Garry, Their web building tool WebsiteBuilder may be the problem so I'll look at other s/w.

I've been more than happy with Fuzioned for the past 2-3 years.

Mike,

This is a minor point but may be worth thinking about.

Hopefully you'll have no problems with your hosting company. If you do however, it may be more difficult to get the domain name moved.

If you have the name registered with one company but hosted somewhere else it is relatively easy to change the re direct instructions if you decide to change.

Like I said, minor but it might save you some aggro somewhere down the line.

AGRO! Already have it. ;D

Hosting companies seem to use the same tactics as mobile contract providers to confuse you, added to that just knowing the technical jargon is bambuzzling.

I'm sure it will be worth it in the long run. ;D
