Title: retirement plans anyone?
Post by: gerard mcmanus on September 11, 2008, 10:26:20 am
Has anyone got plans for that day when they cant clean windows anymore, or are to ill. I know many will just work till they drop, but even though I am kind if young I cant help think it.

What if I am one of the unlucky ones that are not as fit in there later years, and even if you are, you still want to look forward to some sort of retirement plan.

From the little I know, private pension schemes are/can be a rip off, so if you're able to you could try to fund your retirement from a different angle; renting out a property maybe?

I suppose I'm lucky in that when I reach 60 the mortgage will be paid and I'll have a fairly decent pension from my time in the army (I did 17 years out of a possible 22 years, and left at the substansive rank of Staff Sergeant; with a step-up to Warrant Officer); which all adds up to a nice tax-free lump sum and a monthly payment.

And remember, civil service pensions are paid directly from the Treasury; tax payers money; they don't rely on any dodgy pension funds, global markets, or anything else which can affect them!  It's unfair really; the private versus public sector pension difference; after all, it's the private sector which pays for the public sector!

But, if I'm still capable, I hope to still be cleaning windows post 60+; but I'll only do the easy accounts.

By the time i'm sixty Alex will have produced a pole so light you'll have to add weights to it to keep it down then i can go part time 'till my arms and legs seize up or i cant remember where i left my pole.

Most people would succeed in small things, if they are not troubled with ambitions.

 ;D
any person could not succeed even the smallst thing without ambition would not  be a success  as nothing would ever get done  ::)

no inheritance tax the house is worth approx 160k between two sisters one being my wife and with the savings in the estate its still below the 250k or whatever the rate is now, unfortunately we have to sell as the other sister is single mum and needs the money to sort out her life. a neighbour had offered to rent then buy next year

i have a pension plan which is index linked ,i have paid into into it since 1982

its worth less now than 7 years ago

i have 7 years to go till i retire, just hope it goes sky ward till then??

i will not hold my breath though

i think the best thing for you younger guys is ISAS , property, perhaps somthing risky?

i would not reccomend personel pension plans to any one

My advice would be to pay money into a Isa of which you can build up a lump sum when you want to take it. This is not taxable when you get it whereas if you get a personal pension you can only get at it retirement age and you can only take 25% of the fund as a lump sum untaxable, but your monthly payments afterwards are taxed as earned income. The one benefit of a pension is that the government pays 22% of your monthly premuims,or 40% if youre a higher rate tax payer.
One drawback of a Isa is of course you can get at it whenever you want and if youre non disciplined you would keep delving into it and it wouldnt grow to much of a amount.

I agree that personal pensions are a rip off, I would have been better if I had stuck the money under the bed.
Ian Lancaster has got it sorted with his franchising plan, I take my hat off to that guy, he should have a very comfortable retirement.
Here I am 66 and working like a dog.

I have a customer who had a small chain of local shops, he paid into a pension plan like mad, 1000's every month, anyway he retired at 50 something and gets 1000 a week out of it to live on now! Not too shabby eh!! Evrytime i see him hes living it up, going out for meals, drives a new merc, wife has R32 golf, Good on him but i dont think i would trust it, putting all my money in a pension but its tax free isnt it so no doubt thats why he did it?
