Long standing customer (several years) said to me:  "Is it worth doing it while the weather's not so good?"

I said: "How long do you think I would stay in business if I could only work in spells of good weather?"

His reply: "No disrespect, but I don't care about you."

I didn't lose my temper, or even retaliate.  "Revenge is a dish best served cold" - I shall just not do them anymore, and when they call to ask why, I shall say: "I'm sorry, but every time I scheduled them to be done, it looked as though it might rain."

We had exactly the same from one of our custies today, we got cancelled until next Spring!
Was going to ask on here what you all would do, but I think Jefftemperley has answered my question!  ;)

The good thing is that round the corner from her we picked up 2 new customers today!  ;D

I had a custy today who asked me in June to put the windows on hold as she's off to Poland for 3 months. So i said yeh, not a prob as she'd always been "pretty" solid. Anyways i knocked today and she's back. She asked me if i could start doing them every 2 month. For the first time ever i just smiled and said "yeh, not a problem" as i just knew i could NOT be arsed any more. Just let them go. Cos as much as i don't think i am picking up much work at all at the moment, when i think about it,it's still flowing in slowly. Probably enough to cover my losses.

sound to me that they are making excuses to make some cut backs, without letting the neighbours know they're feeling the pinch.
Credit crunch - don't you just hate that phrase!

I had one this morning "can you clean my conservatory roof?" I said "i gave you a quote of thirty pounds two months ago and you said "i'm not paying that!"
"Well, i can't find anyone to do it" funny that, and even better - i'm far too busy to do it now!

I can't wait till spring either. I tell them straight away that i appreciate their reasons but i only take on customers who are willing to have the windows cleaned on a regular basis, and it is only 10 or 12 times a year. They have to decide there and then to carry on or not., choice is theirs. Works 90% of the time. 8) Syd

i was just starting too think the credit crunch was affecting me now, and then picked up £40 worth of work in 3-4 houses this morning, and i think a window cleaner has given up near my round so will probably pick up loads :)  ;D ;D ;D

Ian, as you already know, you're better off without these type of customers. Credit crunch affects people differently and even long standing customers are looking for excuses to save money.

Media hype, how can evryone suddenly run out of money in 6 months it`s no different to the petrol shortage. If they were genuine they`d be cancelling in a years time.

What credit crunch?

A mere myth, touch wood but never lost a customer to the credit crunch and picking up work very regular, even started putting up prices with the new pole system i bought from concept2o. At the end of the day there's always streets/estate's that havent seen a window cleaner for years and are desperate for one and there's always window cleaners retiring, breaking legs and packing in or even passing away.

Anyway the point is that credit crunch is all talk, and if you get out of bed everyday and clean windows 5 days a week you should always pick up work, we should never be out of a job  ;D

A mere myth,  ;D

Pure coincidence or what???

Yellow pages directory has had very few window cleaners listed or advertised in recent, previous years.
Now in this latest edition delivered to households, it's crammed pack full of listings and advertisements from window cleaners who never bothered before with the exception of the odd few regular ones. Are they losing work, expecting to lose a lot of work or just plain greedy for more work than they can handle ???

You wait until the big gas and electricity bills start landing on peoples doormats. We will see who's talking about myths then.

I have had two enquiries from potential new customers. One was up front and said she already had a window cleaner but was looking for a cheaper quote. The other said nothing until I told her the price and then said "Oh no thanks, thats more than I am paying at the moment"

Morning Vince. Am not losing customers but am finding a fair few want to leave longer gaps between cleans. Seem to be getting less enquiries too.

Morning Simon, yes I am gradually moving people onto longer intervals, quite a few have asked and all my new customers want 6-8 weeks when you go to see them.

I don't see it as a problem, George handles it so it doesn't affect me and if it keeps the customer happy so be it.

No I don't, some of my ones that have cancelled have been good customers. To give you an example> One guy was talking to me about his business, he said his phone had never been so quiet. Next time I cleaned his wife paid me and said they would have to leave it for a while.

No problem, I've been there myself.

Another lady told me she had her hours cut at work.

A big local employer has announced 81 redundancies by Christmas. Thats in all the local papers.

My wife works in the NHS, they are getting loads of letters from people who are just writing in on the off chance enquiring if there are any jobs.

The hassle people don't get a chance to cancel because they get dumped PDQ.

more ads in yellow Pages could be more out of work guys trying their hand at wc. Spent their redundo on some tools and an advert and away they go. minimal outlay, can't blame them for trying.
