hi all can any body tell me what the red bit of plastic is for in the middle of lid

It's a vent so that the tank doesn't implode with the pump sucking water out of it.  If you find that water sloshes out of it when it's full, you can always tape up in the inside of the vent and just put a pinprick through the tape which is actually still enough to let the tank breathe.
