I dont understand the obsession with shopfronts - most of the prices they pay are rubbish. Around where I am theres a guy doing most the shops for £2-£3.00 each. If you allow 10 mins per shop inc moving to the next and so on that means that at £3.00 he is making £18.00 P/H Thats way below what you can make on domestic and way below what you can make on the proper commercial work. I imagine this situation is repeated all over the country and then there are the nationals driving the prices down further so I really cant see the attraction. Anyway thats my take on it and at those prices I certainly wouldn't travel 25 miles to do shops that will drop the profits even further however if thats the type of work you are after then I wish you luck. Those that do shops usually hang on to them and many regard them as their best jobs and treat them as the holy grail of window cleaning. If they want to sell themselves short than thats their choice, Nwh you say that there is 50 WC's in front of them, good I hope between them they get them all. Then while they are doing their under priced work I will be cleaning up on the real money earners, well paid domestic and large commercial jobs (hotels, office blocks etc etc etc).

WCE ,Thanks for your interest in me ,I am new on this site BUT NOT NEW TO WINDOW CLEANING .Hey I would not do the smallest shop for less than £ 5.00 ,and just think 20 shops in one road no ladders 5 mins per shop = £ 100 before you are out of bed ,start as early as you like ,getting the money is easy.

Thats the point though, nowadays you'll be hard pushed to find shops that'll pay that and those shops will be few and far between and I doubt you'll get a run of 20.  There are wc's in every town already that do the shops for less than what you want to charge so if you go into a town and canvass the shops as soon as they  find out your more expensive you will have lost them as with shops it usually comes down to whose the cheapest. And if you do buy the work and the price is lower than you want and you try to put the price up then the shops will find someone else who will do it cheaper - They always do.
Change of subject - Just out of interest whats your story (with w/cing I mean). I notice that you have another post looking for a round, does this mean you don't have a full round or have you come back to the industry?

Thanks for sharing that I meant just shops though so whats the highest paid shop?
I happen to agree that in general commercial work is good and pubs etc great! It's just the shops I find a bit of a waste of time.

i would love to have a days work in a town centre but sadly i don't think that there are many around and if they did come up for sale when someone died i couldn't afford em. my most expensive shop is a tenner, 4 large panes outsides only...but i now have a wagtail so even easier now, if i can get good at using it on office windows then maybe i may keep the work, dunno, but if it sells it sells.

JUST seen your lot for sale good luck with the sale.
Also about prices when i go to new customers i advise them and get a good price for a good service tradition window cleaning,I guess you have to  be a bit of a salesman . CUSTOMERS WILL PAY FOR A GOOD SERVICE.

Some customers will but in the shop front world with too many it comes down to price. If this wasn't true then why have the nationals done so well? They charge penuts and usually provide a poor service yet they have many chains tied to them.

They are doing all the cleaning for the hole shop on contract ,ie intial, mitie etc,
and as you say doing a very bad job a lot with WFP WHEN IT IS QUICKER and better Trad.
But this is not all shops mainly banks ,building soc's

True they do bundle and they dont do em all but, the fact is that the market you are aiming for is already reduced by these jokers.

have to agree i do a lot of shop fronts well priced but has took a long time to build
i have lost a lods to £3 -£4 window cleaners
fair enought if they can do them at this price and earn a living which most cannot thats why i have people asking me to do them again i say no get the other w/c were are they now
i do domestic as well alot better work than shops if priced correctly
but like you say proper comercial work pays a lot better than anything
as i have lerned over the past year or so doing these
but  i will never let my domestic go as its your bread and butter if every thing else falls through
you always have these to fall back on ;)

YES I agreed with all of that ,the market that I aim at is most places with windows, I dont do WFP so  I am limited to height that I will go 1st floor max,I pick up work all the time from people going round with WFP ,I THINK SOME OF THEM THINK THAT THEY ARE IN THE SAND BLASTING BUSINESS by the amount STUFF left behind on the glass, only last week I got a petrol station for this very reason.

i am wfp but not on shop fronts trad is quicker imo
like you say you are trad not wfp
so you will be limited to the amount of commercial as well as  a lot of sites now no longer let you on with ladders i have found
like you say there is a lot of guys out there who do not know how to wfp properly like some  one has already posted and are giving wfp a bad name
to me a window cleaner is a window cleaner whether trad or wfp as long as they know what they are doing and do the job safely and correct
trad has its advantages same as wfp if used correctly
i wish you look m8
and take it easy on those ladders

Thanks for that MARTIN ,You are right about the bigger jobs commercial with ladders,I do tend to pick jobs a bit, if any look to time comsuming or awkward to get to I leave out or give them out to someone else, also the bigger the company the longer you (can) wait for your money ,it starts on your terms then starts changing to there terms if they can get away with it,WFP is great when used as it should be .

like you say they try it on now and again bigger com work but if you are like me they dont do it for long im straight on the phone if its not ther when its suposed to be they eventualy get sick of you rining and pay you on time  ;D unlike one this week who hasent payed on time but i let them off as it was a bank holiday  ;)
