Title: Yellow pages 2008/2009
Post by: clinton on July 30, 2008, 06:41:05 pm
Came home this afternoon and the new y pages is sat on my door :D..Had a good look through the c cleaning section and the bigest c cleaning company in cheshire has taken a v small add....I myself decided not to advertise in it at all.....Must be at least 9 c cleaners that have also not renewed........The pages itself is nearly 390 pages less than last year...Next year i think will even be less pages....

I think people a wising up to the fact that YP isn't used as much as it used to be, if YP don't drastically lower their prices they won't be around in ten years.

not big but not small, it cost me a fortune but i had to give it a go, so many diff opinions on here, so i thought, better try myself and if i dont get enough work then i'll just go for a reference ad next time, i'm on yell too, giving everything ago and then getting rid of what doesnt work next year. trial and error, costly but essential.

My last yp add did well there are quite a few others in my area, but i had my add bumped right to the front ! this will be my 4th year in this book. Also got the same add in another area this year ,also with a lot of competition.
Must say it`s been a nightmare getting the ad and artwork sorted this time had to keep sending it back for ammendments as stuff was not right.Crossing my fingers this pays me back as it`s over 3 grand in total  >:(

yes YP have definately had there day, but you talk to a rep and they wont have it. The web has definately took over.
Surprised they dont push yell.com more, i have pulled out of that this year as it did nothing, think google is the way to go.

HI

I would say that NU-Life have a small advert as they are doing a lot of Stone & Hard Floor cleaning.

Hardly anybody does it so there is money to be made.

Plus they do a lot of internet based marketing.

Hurrah, made it onto page two from the back page of carpet cleaners for the first time in 9 years. :) :) You'll probably now tell me there are only 2 pages of cc's :'( :'(

I find it interesting the way that people slate the performance of "the book".

What about the advert you put in it?

If you printed your flyers on pieces of pooty bog roll and stuffed them through letterboxes you wouldn't get a very good return.

If you've spent thousands on YP and not got a decent return, I'm sorry but you've gone wrong somewhere!

I get nearly the same volume of calls from yp with a free one liner as i did with a 3k ad! Also i still get  work from the 2 year old yp with my ad in it. Not enough to justify paying again though IMO.

Ollie your right, im used to hire out bouncy castles 3 years ago. I havent advertised the castles in the YP since 2004 and i am still getting calls this year, when i tell them that i no longer hire them out and when i ask them where they got our number from they say the yellow pages.

Think its twin vacs Clinton.

Back to the old chesnut - choice.......  2 vacs + pump + on board heater OR 3 vacs + pump + external heating.

Yes, the Scorpion has 3 vacs (300cfm), + pump and I have an external heater but didnt use often as customers tap water was mostly sufficient.

It's also a little more energy efficient for you to use the hot water that their boiler has heated, rather than use their electricity to heat cold water when they already have a tank full of hot water in the house losing heat into the atmosphere ;)

BUT

(sorry to get into the heat debate again ::) )

My opinion on hot water rinsing - I often rinse with cold tap temperature water when using M-Power, but if I make a decision that the rinse needs temperature because of the soiling substance (greasy carpet for instance) then the water needs to be HOT HOT, not "hot tap" temperature.  I think, for rinse performance purposes, you may as well be using cold tap temperature unless it's REALLY hot.

I've proved this recently on a restaurant carpet where their tap water is pretty hot, It was the first time I'd cleaned it with M-Power rather than detergent so I wondered whether the cold rinsing theory would hold up.  I started rinsing with the hot tap water and it just didn't feel or look as if the rinse was shifting the crud very well.  I stopped, whacked the temperature up to 90 degrees in-tank and noticed a significant difference.

Obviously apart from rinse performance, some state that there's a difference in drying between cold and hot - I'm not convinced.  I've never had such an enlightening experience to form an opinion either way.

That 300cfm is tempting though, but the thought of having to purchase an inline heater and then all the hassle of using it, tripping over cables, extra set-up time etc... puts me off a bit.  I suppose the only answer to having a machine that does all of that internally is 3 power cables.  I run a ninja with 2 cables and sometimes it's a pain in the butt finding 2 sockets, let alone 3.
