Also try Ashbys, they are near to you and have training days, not sure if it is NCCA or not though.

thanks for the replies lads.

Do you have to be NCCA then?

what about IIRC? Do you have to hold thes qualifications... Is there a real benifit? Its along way to go to get those certificates...Im based in the south east nr chatham.

Ive seen ashbys there in sittingbourne not far from me, their certificate is not that great I dont think, but they do say its insurance approved.

No, you do not have to be NCCA trained, in fact to clean carpets you do not have to have any training at all. NCCA is the recognised body and have a referral scheme, it works for some and not others!!
I am not NCCA trained and have never lost a job by not being a member, it is little known outside of the industry so your customers will probably not heard of them. However if you are a member, it might add weight when you are on a quote and give the customer more confidence in you as you can tell them about the NCCA.
Swings and roundabouts I suppose  :-\

but at ashbys i got to use all of the equipment........there were 6 in our class but there was 26 at prochem........didnt use any equipment at prochem

i think that you can learn more with a smaller group!!

i like ashbys but anyone here will tell u that

is ncca worth having??? imho     no.........if i need to educate the custy about ncca then the ncca is not doing its job!!

Hi Doug,

Exactly how many websites do you have that are virtually the same cut 'n' paste?

Other question is do you use a TM or portable? wy are TM's better? Obvosly they are bigger...  so should give more power? But is that all?

more heat, more power, more suction, more water, and there self sufficient, but in some situations, not always better.

I have only ever done the Prochem course so cant comment on any of the others. I was very happy with the training i was give, yes they do push there own products, do you blame them.
Imo they are the best products out there anyway and i have tried products from Chemspec, alltec etc

Pristine

I suggest you go on one of the courses mentioned, I've heard Ashby's course is good and I'd expect Alltec to be of a high standard. Prochem, I believe, only offer training to puchasers of their machines

You mentioned a certificate as being no good !!!!!!!!!!!!Don't understand what you mean by that.

You don't HAVE to belong to any organisation, but some feel it gives them credibility and some get work from their membership.

I joined the IICRC about 10-12 years ago, but allowed my membership to lapse.

You can attend a Prochem training course without buying a machine, however if you buy a machine you get a training voucher free.
Pristine, what is your name and location you may get a better response.

If you go on any company training course you will be sold that companies products, obvious really.

For that reason alone I opted nearly two years ago as a total newbie to go on the NCCA course.

I enjoyed the course, it gave me the confidence I needed to go for it, and since the the course fee and membership have been more than covered by referrals from their website.

Need I say more?

Mark

My real name is Dave, Nick name Dapper. Location Marden - in kent nr Staplehurst.

You mentioned a certificate as being no good !!!!!!!!!!!!Don't understand what you mean by that.

I joined the IICRC about 10-12 years ago, but allowed my membership to lapse.

The certificate I mentioned was of ASHBYS. It said it gave an attendance certificate. Did not know if it was actually any good? You know like a recognisd qualification as such.

Like I said before I am really a cleaning contractor, It just that recently I have had lots of enquiries about CC and I pass them onto some one we know. And he is getting the work. So I thought instead of passing it over, why not offer the service myself so I can reep the rewards instead.

So obvioulsy as I am no expert in the field of CC what better place to ask here in the forum.

I use to do it before a few years ago now and that was with a portable and the custys back then were happy. But thats when I worked for someone else.

I have looked at TMs and portables and to be honest portable is probably the way I will go. CC wont be my main area more like an add on service. Unless it took over of course.

I have seen a portable at ahsbys that offer nearly the same power as a TM and I know you cants always get every where with a TM like you can with a portable.

And yes I will need to go on a course, Ashbys is probably where I will go. That due to lazyness as I hate traveling. They are nr to me.

I have done basic CC ON BICSc courses

I know I have alot to learn in CC the main worry would be cleaning a carpet and the colours runs etc ..... that seems worrying to me ...as long as I can get past that I think I will be alright.

Better now we know your real name Dave.

Why not go back into your profile and fill in the details so its there for all to see in the future (some of us older ones forget so easy).

Dave

As far as I can see, you want a course on how to safely clean carpets, get a good understanding of the various methods of doing so, the machines to use, the products to use and an understanding of the way to avoid the pitfalls.

Don't think such a comprehensive course exists. If it did, it would take abouit four days to deliver. But !

For the technical side and the actual qualification, you will get this by completing ( and passing ) the IICRC courses of which there are many.

For hands on, there are a number of those run by the NCCA, eg, they recently had a stain removing course.

I've attended many over the years, but a friend recently spent two days at Ashby's on reckoned it was an excellent practical course, with plenty hands on.

Most of what you need to know will come from experience and there are two things you must avoid,

Overwetting, which is very common with hwe machines, best practice, is to prespray with a product which will release the soil from the fibres, some need aggitating, followed by rinsing the soil laden prespray from the fibres. Simple really, but, if you move too slowly, or fail to release the trigger before you get to the end of the back stroke, or keep the trigger up on the forward stroke, too much water will go down.

Overstrength prespray.............follow the instructions, spray a mist on to the carpet, it's not the same as cleaning pathways.  Some chemicals need aggitating to work effectively, others need a few minutes dwell time.

You can rinse with only water in the tank, but with so many chemicals added to our tap water a small ammount of acid rinse gives some security against colour runs.

There are a number of powerful portables which will do 99% of what you come across, t/m's have more power, but less flexibility.

As I said that is the basic information, but a couple of days at Ashby's or Alltec or Prochem would be beneficial.

Have fun

robert m

NCCA in Leceister - 0116 271 9550

Alltec in Fowlmere

Contact Alltec on 0800 695 0222 they will send you a training course details there are not courses during August.

NCCA courses are non bias to chemical and machine retailers, however all the major retailers send there machines to the training for you to try and examin.

Alltec - some courses are like prochem and chemspecs you are trained using their machines and chemicals.  However, the IICRC courses at Alltec are non bias.

Remember if you do a NCCA course you will only be accepted as a NCCA member if you choose to join, you cannot become a IICRC member by joining or doing the NCCA course. If you do the IICRC course then you can gain membership to both the NCCA and the IICRC, however I did find the NCCA course to be a bit more in depth. The IICRC membership is £100 see NCCA for there price. If you do the NCCA course you could get a special price for your first year membership. I didn't tell you that bit, ok). You will need to have appropriate insurance to gain  membership make sure you get risk treatment cover, try this company McGregor Lloyd Ltd, 0121 706 0616, they know exactly what you need I found them to be the most helpful and they provided the right cover.

the best training you can get is from accompanying a carpet cleaner for 2-3 days, going into customers house and cleaning carpets, plus you learn more about the business while travelling in the van between jobs.

Mossie once talked about a mentoring scheme, this is the way to go.

imagine spending an hour in Allied Carpets with an experienced carpet cleaner just examining carpets, you'll soon know the difference between a Wilton and a Berber.
