Has anyone had to use their public liability insurance? Ever had a claim made against you or have you ever damaged property and maybe found your insurance doesn't cover it? Just interested to hear what happens when your ladders fall on the customers car or you can't hold that pole horizontal above that glass roof any longer. ;D

Not yet, but i suppose it might happen one day, my insurance is pretty basic and doesn't cover the glass i'm working on. I've never worried too much before, but i have been known to leave a superlight top section dangling at full stretch before - could have damaged something had it not stayed there. ;D

A customer once made a claim on their insurance after I pointed out that their extention roof was leaking. She told them that I had pointed it out to her and they came after me for £800 for causing the damage.
They couldn't make it stick to me as the roof was over 15yrs old and the customer had asked me to do the job and therefore had to take responsibility. If I had gone up there without their permission the outcome may have been different.

It's worth checking the excess on your policy if getting insurance covering glass worked upon.
My excess was £250 and the most expensive glass i clean costs £200 a pane.
Not worth spending the extra for what is a false sense of security for many of us.

Its worth really reading the small print on your public liability insurance because it contains so many get out clauses its next to useless.
However, I still have it.

I have 5mill public liability and like many others does not cover me for the window being worked on.
But if someone fell over my hose and badly hurt themselve's i would hope that it would pay out.

That's pretty much my thoughts too. I think it's inlikely i will break the glass i'm working on anyway, but just wondered how many claims actually come to light in this trade. I'm thinking that general cleaning the risks must be fairly small. If you were to damage a car, would their own insurance cover them anyway? Is there any point in being insured to the hilt?

Mine also has the clause that it doesn't cover the use of ladders or any injury or damage resulting from the use of ladders.
Thats pretty much standard. Not much good for a window cleaner.
