Title: Is this a hobby?
Post by: ftp on July 23, 2008, 10:42:09 pm
Why do people put a list of their equipment as a signature? Whats going on? All this brush fondling is getting out of hand. Perhaps we need cleanitup anoraks to wear.  ::)
I'll just whip my pole out - i'll show you mine if you show me yours.  ;D

i hate to say it, its all rather sad

im on various forums, you get on the Vdub forums what vans / cars you have

1959 double door van in dove blue with full devon conversion

now i can see the point of that, if you ask about a problem, you get a answer specific to your van

or on Tech / PC forums you list your rig, so people can see what your running and you can show off a little that you have sqeezed a little more out of your cpu ( its called overclocking incase any1 cares )

but what pole and brush your using, who really cares

I can only think of 2.  ;D
There has to be somewhere to strut their stuff.
Customers don't care. And there's better things to chat with your mates about.
In fact, i don't think anyone cares.  ;)

I list my equipment because it answers many questions for newbies who want to know the best poles, and vehicles to start a wfp business, its not to brag. I found it helpful on the Window Tools forum when I started out, Luke

Oh and whats wrong with being proud of your business and your tools, I am, they are my livelihood. I dont think anybody who frequents this forum can be justified in telling somebody who lists their work tools as an anorak!!!!  :) I think by definition they are anoraks themselves, some are just worse than others! Luke

Luke listing your equipment wont informnewbies theyre the best pieces of kit to have. It just tells newbies thats what you have, they wont assume theyre the best, why should they? just because Rupert The Hair has them in his signature?

I am an anorak! I try not to bore others with it (particularly friends and family) although most people want to talk about it so I end up discussing tools of the trade far too often.

The reason that I do not mind being an anorak, is that:

1. I still look quite normal and able to integrate with society in a reasoning and (fairly) intelligent way.

2. My family still love me.

3. It has become my business to know the details and differences, so some people like it.

4. The right tools do make an enormous difference to my working life and the strain it puts on my body. When I went from Ladders to WFP my working week went from 4.5 days a week to 2.5 days a week. In the 7 years since that point I have year on year managed to reduce my working time whilst retaining or increasing the same level of income. Often these changes are down to something very anoraky (is that a word) such as a reel of 6mm hose saving me 1/2 hour a day or going from a trolley to a vehicle mount saving me another 1/2 hour a day or a new brush making each job a couple of minutes quicker or a new pole meaning that I no longer come home and have to soak my aching back in the bath just to feel human again.

5. I'm still quite chuffed that I am continuing my trade of 23 years in a way that now means I quite enjoy going out to work (as much as anyone can!) rather than enduring it and being frightened every so often.

6. I also have a life!

(does 10g/1ft/50litres really matter? yes if you need it!)

they might be the "best" for you, but thats just a opinion, im sure the ioncis boys will say that the best pole is ionics etc etc, and other system users who swear by the pole / brush / hose of that outfit

No Luke your not likely to list someone elses, but just because youve listed it doesnt therefore that that makes it the best, it means its what you use.

Matt

If it is a business that you have built from scratch then you are proud of it.  The simple fact is that generally the public cant tell the difference between a slx or harris DIY pole. I am lucky if I can keep a customers interest up long enough to explain the pure water element of wfp let alone explain about the kit. This is a window cleaning forum where you can talk to others in your industry who you might actually be hold the interest of for more than 5 seconds and who understand the technical side of the business. In short most on here are proud of their business (rightly so) and come on here to talk shop so it no surprise that some list their kit, they are proud of what they have achieved. Theres nothing wrong with that and if you think it's sad why come on here? To me it's that simple.

this is so funny, i was chatting to my old man and one of his lads today who is WFP loopy. i rearly see them now adays and since i saw them last i've become a father, lost my mother in-law to cancer but all we spoke about was wfp. i drove away from the job thinking 'Dean, this wfp marlarky is turning you in to a propper geek!'. but then i got to thinking,

since my trouble n strife became pregnate ive given up most my hobbies, Rugby, Bodybuilding, Guitar, Kick Boxing pretty much the only hobbie i seem to have now is wfp. now rugby always cost me when i couldnt work through injorys same as kick boxing. playing guitar takes sooooo many presous hours of family time form us both and any one who has ever entered the world of bodybuilding will know its one of the most exspencive hobbies going

so all in all, wfp aint so bad after all. at the end of the day anything that makes you money rather than cost you it is a winner to me!

lets just hope i get the bloody thing up and running soon  >:(

It gives a good indication of a setup that works for people, like my setup works very well, it's gives them an idea.

Except that Luke's poles, like mine are actually the best on the market right now. ( ;) )  ;D

As somebody who posts on a variety of non WC forums I can sympathise with that Matt however it has occurred to me that some  people on here may not have any interests outside window cleaning and their poles and brushes etc are their interests.  :-\
