A lady rang me today who has borrowed a friends carpet cleaner over the weekend to clean her wool carpet.
She has woke up this morning to find dark brown patches all over it, i assume this will be browning.
I asked her what solutions she used in the machine and she sain "Astonish".
Has anyone heard of this and have any info on the stuff such as Ph etc ?

Sounds like it could be browning. Looked at thier website but does not give any product msds. You might get one off them if you give them a call

If its the "Mechanical Cleaning Machine" solution then the data sheet says PH of 11.5-12.5. Chances are the carpet has been overwetted. This along with a high PH solution which has probably been glugged rather than measured out.
Gerry typed as I was replying. Data sheet is there if you click on the picture of the product and scroll down.

Yep, it's another miracle product similar to Cillit Bang and Vanish. Used to be advertised on the shopping channels and can now be bought at hard ware stores and places like Woolworths.
I bought some once to clean up some old pennies :-[, didn't work on them either >:(.
Sounds like you know what she has done and you know the solution. Go and have a look, the only other option she has is replacing her carpets.

If the lady has a wool carpet and no one knows for sure it could be too high a ph, if not wool could be over wetting and if there is a jute backing could have wick up from the jute, or both. Either way its why customers shopuld not clean their own carpets and call in the professionals.
strond acid rinse should help to cure either problem if you wish to do the job, and quick drying

Could be pockets of dirt that have wicked up?
