Title: Noisy pumptec 500 psi punp
Post by: jeff1966 on June 26, 2008, 08:48:48 am
I've had my powerflite machine for about 6 months it's done about 250 hrs,the pump as been  making a scraping scratchy noise near enough from new it happens when the pump is turned right up or on a lower pressure the noise comes and goes.Been on to the suppliers and  he says that piston pumps are noisy ,I don't want to wait till the warranty runs out to find out the pump needs repairing.Anyone experienced anything similar.

yeah mine did the same, the pump head went belly up and replacement head was the price of a re-mortgage or a small car.
Bought a new pump from A & M suppliers for £350.00

Think you only get 3 months warranty on pumps anyway dont you ,remember going through a fair few pumps on portables in well under a year and having to pay out my own pocket.

Could be wrong this might not apply on new machines subject to a 6 month service only on replacement pumps.

Pretty sure the likes of ashbys and prochem only give 3 months warranty on replacement pumps because its classed as commercial not domestic use .

 Things might of changed though.

These pumps are noisy....the noise amplified through the body of the machine.

I'v a 400 psi Ninja. Last year I mounted the pump on rubber disc bushes. This reduced the vibration (noise) to half.

As posted by Rob, there could be a problem with the cam and piston.

Recently refurbished mine... think the repair kit was about £80 including piston, valves and seals.

I Have same machine and the pump is on the noisy side but in nearly two years have not had any problems. I was told to turn the pressure down to below 200 psi when switching it off and it would last longer. Also mainly use a freshwater rinse or at least flush it with fresh water after a days use.
Go for the waranty option soon if it doesnt sound right.

Cheers

Fred

Sounds like the bearing collapsing , mine did about 2 months ago.
new bearing and grease it well , should sort things out.
Pressure should be dropped to below 100 psi to maintain pump life.
After replacing eccentric bearing i realised just how noisy it had become.

In that case you should take it up with company you purchased machine from.

In the event of them not helping you you should publish all the facts on hear

Date of purchase Guarantee etc name of supplying company.
Then if anyone else buys a machine from them they know to triple check the Guarantee
