Title: You've got to laugh
Post by: John Gregory on June 24, 2008, 10:20:52 pm
Finally  picked up the courage to do my first leather touch up today , an hour and a half mixing me colours messing about with hair dryers and all that, the customer was amazed with my knowledge of leather and commitment to get the colour match bang on , got a slight block on my air brush , while trying to clear the blockage I must of pressureised it, brown pigment flew out all over this womens blouse and glasses .
Luckily she saw the funny side of it , Another lesson  learned

The leather renovation I find is very rewarding and IMO when you get the confidence is quite easy, infact selling it is quite easy.

I didn't have you down for one of those leather touch up merchants. Shaun seems to enjoy it too. Maybe you can team up on a sofa. ;)

Just finished this one this afternoon. Micro pigmented aniline two tone - well, you can see the problem :P (excuse the mess in the garage!, this is before I took it into our other work room).

Cheers lads

Leather de-greaser was used but it had to be re-pigmented (difficult two tone) as the colour loss was very evident, and then finished.

Kev

John - its an aniline that has a very fine pigment which does absorb liquids.

Kev

I get confused with all this terminology  is it the same as a wax pull up

John,

Semi-aniline simply means they are semi-absorbent.

That’s what you have to know for a start.

Of course, the more you ask; the more you learn.

So keep on asking!

Well done Kev the job turned out very well.  Good to hear the training paid for itself already.

Micro Pigment is a much better term to use than semi aniline as it differentiates between the different finihsing styles that are absorbent.  It is not like a pull up style  John which has a translucent coating rather than a pigmented coating.

Be careful with this as Aniline is toataly different to pigmented.
Semi aniline is not pigmented at all it has a top coat finish over the aniline dyes.
A pigmented leather wether its micro pigmented( just means a small amount of paint) or fully pigmented ( lots of paint) is a pigmented leather.

They are not allowed to call the leather Aniline or semi aniline if it has pigment over it.

Who is not allowed to Paul??

We have a showroom sample book which is all totally pigmented leather some of which is not even aniline dyed which has semi-aniline written all over the cover.  This is why it is essential to make your own assessment of the type of finish that has been used and not to rely on names.

Not wanting to seem picky but on the last photo can you see the out line of the repair?Did you two tone it again with pigment?
I know that two tones are very difficult to copy most of the time.

Trust you to say that :-*

Chris
I get the impression you dont like leather then :P

Mike
you are a picky b*gger! No actually its shading. There is a slight dip in the leather where the head has pushed it in, causing it to look a tad darker. But when you look at it in different directions it looks spot on. Plus I had to compress the photos to get them on CIU so the quality has suffered. Thats my excuse anyway ;D

John
No its different to wax pull up (I think someone else has mentioned why already).

Cheers
