Post by: peter holley on June 18, 2008, 10:14:19 pm
that on this forum whenever someone loses a job to someone whos cheaper, they are unprofessional, and not doing a good job :o

what a load of nonsense.... this is sometimes true , but not always the case.    sometimes  a wfp guy will be able to price cheaper if he has a a lot of custies in the area...

this forum makes me laugh sometimes, with the amount of guys with over inflated ideas of themselves...(YOU ARE JUST WINDOW CLEANERS LIKE ME )

It's true tho' isn't it? There's loads of stuff posted that makes ones blood boil, but you can't please everyone.

I wouldn't worry about it - but you do perhaps have a point, but you even admit in your first post that, 'it's sometimes true', just after saying that it's 'nonsense'.  But confusing.

Best wishes and hatred

Just kidding about the hatred thing, ok?   :)

Mr Tumble, can I ask what is with the supersize images you use in your signature. Anyone with a slow connection will have to wait ages for a post to long should you reply twice let alone three times lol

Theres no "just" about being a window cleaner.

that's my point ....we feel proud to be succesfull  as window cleaners, and the majority of our customers value our services, but on the whole our proffesion is percieved as "just" a window cleaner. Hence the resentment of statements such as "just" a wc, as we hear it all the time,. therefore some wc feel the need to elevate themselves into super cleaners ::)  like me ;D

In the areas that I work I have had to turn work down as i have too much, and as the wfp is a lot quicker than traditional you have to price accordingly (which is usually cheaper) and if the cussie is not happy with wfp and wants trad then i charge more for getting me ladders off

Perhaps it's because we converted to wfp from trad that we still price as if we were going to trad.

there will always be someone cheaper than yourselves, good Wc's or bador perhaps..........people just don't want to admit that they've lost a custie to someone who is charging more  ;D

To be honest when we've had people cancel and they say it's because of your price etc etc, I really do not want to know what their next one is going to charge as there really is no point  ;)

Why is it that so many of us see ourselves as lowly window cleaners? I know from time to time I do and I also laugh when I look at George and it shows me how much I have turned over for the week....Business is growing and doing well  :)

Personally I used to have a good career in computing and spent many years buidling a good life within it...I suppose that during those 'good' years I did look down on manual labour...and those that did it...so in a nutshell thats why I feel 'lowly' sometimes...how about you?

Dave.

I find it strange then, after hearing how marvelous you all are, that not one amongst is considered good enough to be a moderator on this site.

That has to be the ultimate, just a window cleaner put down.

I can think of over ten names that would do a good job, so where exactly does the problem lie?

Why price WFP cheaper? Should be the same or more as you are cleaning more. Don't forget running costs and extra petrol to carry that water. Must be mad to price cheaper if WFP just because it's quicker. :)

I am picking up work off trad cleaners and charging double what their prices were. I don't feel guilty about it as the customers are willing to pay it for a better clean. No offence intended to trad cleaners by the way, it's just how it is. :)

I think the "just a window cleaner" stuff probably comes about because IMO it is hard to think of a job that is so useless.  ;)

I've been to customers that haven't had their windows cleaned for six months and they still looked fine from the road.

You'd notice it if your rubbish wasn't collected for six months, but windows........?

It's never going to be a vital job to anyone and to many it is just a tradition.

Hence IMO the lowly tag. We probably deserve it. LOL

What we do for a living is very small in the grand scheme of things and possibly it would do some of the "big business blokes"  good to sometimes realise how insignificant what they do really is.

When I have told  people there are forums for window cleaners they think I am making it up.  ;D

The main difference between us window cleaners and other trivial jobs is that we really graft for a living unlike many others, simply because of the earning potential. If the earning potential wasn't there half of us wouldn't bother doing this job and put up with being labelled as just a window cleaner.
I'm a metalsmith by trade, but if anybody asks me what I do, I tell them I'm a window cleaner and proud of it. I run a successful business enabling me to pay my mortgage (on my own), all the other bills, credit free, not up to my eyeballs in debt like the majority of this country and hold my head up high with pride not shame. I enjoy the flexibility of this job and wouldn't swap for a glorified title and job position in some better perceived job elsewhere.

I believe that the "only a window cleaner" is something that is in our own self perception, and that perception derives from the lack of consideration many of our customers show us.
It's what we think they are thinking about us, not the way we think about ourselves.
We have all felt it at some time, a customer that owes for two months cleaning drives past you, making sure that you are invisible.
The cars in the drive, the tellys on, but there's no answer when you knock, 5 mins later the car has gone.
The windows that you pushed shut 10 mins ago are open again, but they don't answer the door.
You posted your cleaned the window slip saying collect on Thursday, Thursday comes and they got no money.
Customers of 10 years standing write out a cheque leaving your name blank. Guys I could go on, but you get the gist.
When people treat us like this, it's no wonder that "yeah, I'm only the window cleaner" feeling effects us.
We just get on with it, and smile when we count our pennies.

wel discount its not a matter of only coming on when im bored its more a matter of finding the time to come on here.
This is the first night i have been home this week before 11pm and far from bored i have watched the turks beat the croats on penalties

Recently i have been very busy at work and have had my dad in hospital my mum in another hospital and my mum in law in a third hospital so in between running everyone back and forward and continuing to drive our business forward i really haven't had a moment.

Then there are the Chamber of Commerce meetings the charity we support and the team we sponsor

Even the school where my son has just finished his sixth and final year has had so many award days etc i am constantly running around and then my 21 year old daughter and partner announce they are 13 weeks pregnant!!!

So i would love to come on more regular but BLOOMING LIFE GETS IN THE WAY lol
