Title: leather identification
Post by: kinder clean on June 18, 2008, 01:12:36 am

I have not had any formal training in leather identification or cleaning, but have picked up a lot of information from this forum.

Am I right in saying pigmented leather is the most common and also the one that's straight forward to clean?

If so my next question is - How to identify pigmented from non pigmented?

Cheers Paul

Hi,

The easiest way to tell is by putting a drop of water onto the leather. If it soaks in the leather has no finish and will be difficult to clean. On a pigmented leather the water would sit on the surface.

Whilst that is very general advice, if you want it in more detail leather types & identification can be found here - www. furnitureclinic-trade.co.uk/Guides.htm

We do a Leather ID handbook that contains leather swatches and notes on identification and cleaning processes.  Cost is £35.00 + vat to the trade.

Hope this helps
