I do not dispute the following statement:-
"Baby wipes – just about the worst thing you can use on a leather as they break down the finish and will eventually ruin it."
But can someone tell me why and how so that I can explain it fully to a potential customer.
Thanks
Roger

They contain alcohol, which will soften the leather finish. Eventually making it go sticky and attract dirt etc, which will eventually ruin the leather.
It is by no means something that will happen over night.
They then might say, well the wipes are alcohol free.
A good response is that they won't clean the leather very well, at least not compared to a professional clean. Nor do they offer any form of nourishment or protection.

why do people look for cheap short cuts.
leather cleaner for leather,
baby wipes for babies.
Life is really that simple

Is leather cleaner ok to clean babys ?

Hi Roger
People do confuse leather with skin which is where much of the problem comes from (feeding, conditioning etc.) Leather is less like skin than a wooden table leg is like a tree. I have yet to see anyone standing their table in compost to keep it in good condition!!!!!
Baby wipes are bad for several reasons on leather.
Although people tend to think of them as fairly gentle products becasue they are used on babies, they are actually designed to neutralize the acid of the urine and faeces which if left on the skin can increase in strength. As leather should be cleaned with a fairly neutral pH cleaner baby wipes (in most cases) do not fulfill this criteria and the strength of them will act to break down the finish if used on a regular basis.
A lot of baby wipes also contain alcohol which although used during some cleaning processes on leather it will break down the finish over time if used repeatedly.
Most people who use baby wipes do not simply use them once but over and over again and it is this repeated action that will break down the finish and cause it to peel off.
There are often other ingredients in baby wipes that will not be able to be absorbed buy the leather finish (oils, silicones, etc.) and these will remain on the surface attracting more dirt which is also a cause of finish failure.
Of course there is also the added problem of people using the wrong cleaning product for the wrong purpose. I am sure that if customer x (who uses baby wipes and ends up with a sticky problem ) rings up her baby wipe producer they will be able to help her solve her leather problem!!!!!

Thanks for the info Ben and Judy
best regards. Roger

Judy very good answer.
Roger not all baby wipes contain alcohol, some have a very high ph and the chemical can be quite aggresive to the leathers top coat.
As the guys above say it wont do any major damage if used once of twice but if used constantly over a period of time it will wear the top coat down and damage it.
If you come across this problem it is easy to rectify ;)

Sorry Kev cannot remember seeing one about the website what was it you needed to know. We get a hundred or more email enquiries evey day now so the odd one does get missed I'm afraid. Let me know what you need.

Tell your customer that:
Healthy leather is always squeaky clean!
Healthy leather is without the tackiness or brightness.
Healthy leather is always within the pH range of 3-5.
Ask them to check on the pH value of leather.
Ask them to check on the pH value of the products they use on it.
Is the pH value of the leather and the product used compatible?
If they are not, are they then neutralized?
To the pH balanced of healthy leather (pH 3-5).
