Im taking over my mum and dads window cleaning business in September this year and really dont like the idea of (me a woman) driving a trailer, so im looking into getting myself a little van something maybe like a EXPERT or PARTNER big enough for my w.f.pole to go in the van not on top.
I have not a clue what price range for second hand I can expect to pay.
As cheap but good as I can get would be good to start with as am starting out on my own after being at home for 3 years being a mummy now with more free time on my hands I want to get out there and be a working mum not like some that never work cos its easier to claim benefits.
Anyone with advice on where to look or what one to look for o even if you have one going for sale I would really love to hear from you.
P.s please dont suggest e-bay as wouldnt entertain it van wise im no good and couldnt face buying something and 2 months later it fals apart.
Kind regards

cheap as chips they are, although that is a 600, mines a 800, , meaning its payload, 800 kg
cheap to run, £70 to fill it, 550 miles to a tank loaded up, probably more if you didnt carry what i do

First of all, good on you ;) do you have a budget in mind for a van ? if you do it will be easier for any of us to help you more.

I'm not dead yet Jonah ;D ;D
Shell is having my round, all my gear, I'm doing her water and battery for her so I'm not buying her a van as well ;D
She's been wfp for a couple of months now and I can let her get on with one house while I do the other, so come September she'll be ready to go it aloan.
I will still be doing the odd Jobs with her and I will build up the guttering and conservatory side of the business.

Ian, I hate vans :o
I have always used a Trailer, I offered her that, but it takes skill to drive a trailer unlike a van were you point it in the direction you want to go. ;D

Ian I dont want to drive a trailor thats why im not having dads and want a van!!!
I had a horrible car crash last year a Polish man hit me head on as I turned round a corner, he was also on the wrong side of the road, it was the most scariest thing of my life! since then ive lost all confidence driving I can drive my Zafira but thats it(pretty much the same size as a van). :(
-
No No No No NO!
I'm even welding her up a Tank frame and making her pole brackets for the van but I'm not buying a van.

I know how you feel I had a crash nearly 2 years ago and nearly ended up in bed for the rest of my life I was very lucky, that was my wake up call to get a vans.
You will be able to get a van for a couple of grand and I am sure (ya dad) Jeff will help out a little (sorry jeff I am a dad aswell) having casj and someone selling helps a great deal. You will make it anyway reading your posts and it is refreshing to read.
Good Luck
Ian

Start a poll to see if the people on here think (your Dad (Jeff) should buy the van, I already know the answer but it would be funny to read the posts than come with it.
Ian
p.s your very welcome ;D

One thing I will say about Shell is she is already an experienced Trad user, as are her 2 sisters, they have all helped out in the business through out its 11 year run, so Shell is no new comer to w/c Just the world of wfp, but now has 2 months of that under her belt.

Fair play to Her Jeff, and you aswell I am happy in the thought that one day my 3 boys will take over from me. I know this sound a little sexist (not meant to girls and I am a bloke forgive me) having girls and then getting them to window clean is Fantastic taking over must make you smile inside Jeff.

Shell has always made me proud of her, nothings to much trouble for her, her mum suffers from MS and she's always here constantly helping her out.
And she also now knows what its like to be treated like a Taxi service.
Believe this or not but Having females in a w/c business brought us in a lot more business.
-
My twelve year old daughter cleaned my windows with wfp yesterday and the windows came up perfect she does them regularly and always does a good job
When shes a bit older i think i will take her out with me if she wants to of course
I had never considered it before but after reading this thread then why not it seems to be working for you and sounds like you are all very close to each other once again Jeff you have been an inspiration to me
Oh and good luck to you MissyShell in your w/c ing although it sounds like you have a good start already
Last thing i say dad should buy you a van ::)
Dean
-
Jeff it is decided you must but a van for your lovelly daughter ;D. You are just going to have to cash in a few of your share options ££££££££££££££ :P

check the auto trader theres a lot of small vans out there but you will struggle to get your poles into a partner make sure you measure before you look .
my wife would never drive my van she cant reverse it so i recently put reversing sensors on it for her now she has no problem good luck any way
-
we have a partner. the only pole we cant get in is our 60ft pole
-
Thanks for the help and kind words Guy's.
Shell is off to a very good start and she'll have mine and her mums backing and help all the way, but I'm still not buying her that van ;D
She will also have any legal backing she may need from her in-laws as they are solicitors, they have helped me in the past and it was all free ;D
Now there's a thing, She should ask her in-laws for a new van now they are megga rich.
-

I can see we are going to have to ware you down Jeff lol
-
I think you should but her a van Jeff. A Transporter would do her nicely LOL!!!
-
Not when she has kind and generous in-laws who would probably buy her a brand new one if she asked them.
-
Sorry to swim against the tide, but I'd stick with the trailer.
Or do you need to take an extra test these days?

michelle, i think thats your name apologise if it aint
where abouts are you?

michelle, i think thats your name apologise if it aint
where abouts are you?
I am in the same area as Jeff my dad Somerset.
-
Your dad has made some posts, particularly when he was changing over to wfp, that were inspirational to many people including me.
He gives the best tips on cleaning on here.
His trailer is a brilliant design, and he knows all about electrics.
But, I had a trailer and i hated it. Having a van will be a revelation not just for you but for him too. Fix the reel on top of the tank.
Because I really like Jeff I have been suggesting a van for some time. All the best with whatever you decide to do.
-
I would say do not fix reel on top as one it is a trip hazard and could well leave you with stolen content of van if left open.
have outside ports less trip hazard and you can lock van and away you go.
Ian
-
The difference it makes is if you want to lift the reel in and out of the van for every job. I don't because it is heavy and wastes time, but each to their own.
-

Ian
Trip hazard????
You wait until I show you what I have planed for Shells hose coming out of her van, I need to iron out a few details yet, but if anyone trips over this hose then it would be a deliberate act.
Shell Knows all about the H&S side of things now and if a Job calls for extra precautions she's on the ball with the signs out and the hose in the rubber anti trip that I put pictures up off some time back.
Sorry to swim against the tide, but I'd stick with the trailer.
Or do you need to take an extra test these days?
Not everyone is proficient with a trailer Wally, anyone can tow one, its when it comes to the reversing the skill begins.
If you can't see your trailer from your mirrors then your in trouble when it comes to reversing, Shell has a people carrier and to see the trailer from this would be extremely difficult.
-

one arm out of van pop on house away you go 4 about the same time as getting pole out.
Do you leave your doors open when working discount ??

Mostly, but i can close them and it doesn't stop the flow. Try and remember not everyone is a weightlifter. I don't use my hybrid much either, like shel I use the 17'xtel because it's lighter.
I could say loads on the implications of this topic but on occasion i get the idea my input isn't required so i'll keep quiet.

Dude since when has this stopped you from giving your view and I for one would like to hear it.
we use 17ft xtels also because they are cheap to replace.
I am not a weight lifter at all but a reel is not heavy IMO
I went for outside ports for 2 reasons, 1 because I could lock van, 2 less of a hazard to others.
Give your views/reply.
Say what you think I do.

Were all relatively new to wfp? Its only become so popular over the past few years, so anything we can make, design or build to make our own work become easier, then were all going to have an easier life, that's why I like to share any idea's I have with you Guy's and not Jump on the band wagon to make money out of you.
Share your idea's guy's and lets help each other.

Shell hate to admit it, but your dad is right again ;)
I think hes not budging on the van for you, I did try my best with the poll, good luck and with ya dad behind you your on a winner.
Ian
-
Off topic?
The implications?
It doesn't matter who pays for the van or what sort you get although scudo/expert would be my choice.
What matters is that you make the business as easy to operate physicaly as possible. There is nothing like working with great kit that actually works for encouraging you to carry on and look forward to the days work rather than dreading it.
I can tell that at the moment you are very fired up, and you have every right to be as this is a very exciting departure for you. To make it stay that way you need to take every advantage you can get.
Thinking clearly, and making bold decisions that you are both a little afraid of is part of this. Do not be timid, investment and expansion is the only sustainable route.
-
Off topic?
Thinking clearly, making bold decisions that you are both a little afraid of is part of this. Do not be timid, investment and expansion is the only sustainable route.
Clive, were do you get this dribble from :o
I can assure you, I have never been afraid to make a decision as and when its needed, Is it because I never wanted a van? You like vans I don't? So my trailer suited me.
I have almost every tool in the box to make the work that much easier, and I'm looking for new ones all the time, we continue to invest as and when needed.
We have enough work (without the extras) to keep 2 people going over a 6 week period, if anything is wrong there, then please let me know where I'm going wrong? :'( :'(
-
Thanks for that.
The job is phyically very hard, and allowances and planning should include this fact as the primary obstacle to the businesses continued success (IMO).Obtaining a van is a good move if you wish to sustain the business long term. There's not much point me saying anything beyond this.
-
I've managed to sustain my business for 11 years now Clive without a van and my business continued to grow until it reached a point, were I no longer wanted any more business.
I am still at a point were business has boomed so much that My daughter will continuing with the windows side and I'm going to concentrate on Guttering and conservatories.
So somewhere along the lines I'm doing something right, if we wanted to, we could grow even more and begin to employ, that is a different avenue altogether and not one I wish to take.
-
That's told me then. I'll shut up,
-
That's told me then. I'll shut up,
Don't shut up Clive :o I value your in-put ;)

Lets try going off topic and see if that gets a better reaction.
I took up running at over forty and wasn't very good. In a field of 500 i might come 280 eth. The fastest I could ever run was about 7.5 min/mile but very often nearer 9min/mile.
In races I used to sprint the last half mile, overtaking a few at the end. Then I noticed letters in running magazines and comments from women. Apparently I wasn't the only man who did this and it's quite an aggresive/competitive (but pointless) thing that men do.
Women only races are very popular for this very reason(amongst others)with millions taking part in the race for life.
In a way this forum is a bit that way, and so are our attitudes to our work. We are competitive and chauvanistic and it comes so naturally to us that we don't even know that we are doing it.
-
I'm glad I was able to make that clear ;D

I think I understood it ;D ;D
I see what your getting at Clive, you gave it your best shot, you tried, you competed, but you continued to the end and so on?
If you wanted to be really competitive you could have tried harder to get higher than you did, but Hey who cares the most important thing is, you gave it your best shot and probably enjoyed the journey along the way?
Exactly the same in business, we start we canvas (or whatever) we learn as we go along to become competitive, we think we can never be up there with the larger companies, WRONG! If you want to get there you have to try harder, you may not become number one but you can get within the top if you wanted to,
Is there anything stopping you get to the top? NO, its only our own attitudes to our work and life style's that decides how high we want to go, it will take time the same as training to run, the harder you work the better you can become.
I did all my training and competitions along the way and I got to were I wanted to be.
You are so right about us being competitive and chauvinistic without even realising it, one other thing you should have mentioned, how many of us have been sat in the pub having a beer with our friends and chatting away??
Next time your in a group of people, sit and study them, just watch how many of us try to revert the conversation and topic's back to talking about our self's, Its our favorite subject, we talk about our self's without even realising it.
The human race is a strange breed. ;)

I enjoyed reading that post,.
I talk alot to myself so I am a little odd but Ido get some really positive feedback ;D
-
I always wanted to run, winning didn't matter, i didn't expect to become a champion. But there is a difference between us and women.
Maybe if there was another female wfp operator she could post on this and give Shell some good advice. The only ones i've seen on here (trad) didn't last long.
Maybe they didn't have a van or think things through?
-
You and your Vans Clive ;D ;D
Shell is getting a van :P and for 3 reasons? 1. Easier than a trailer, 2. Image, 3, because she wanted one.
Shell is one for image, the bossy thing even made us change all our uniforms so that they had large lettering on the reverse saying window cleaner.
Lets see how Shell has and will take over and run the company.
She has worked on & off with myself and the boss for over 10 years and is a very experienced Trad worker including poling, she knows every single customer we have and that's over 300 of them, she can competently price a property no matter what shape or size.
she's competent at dealing with the customers including the nice ones and the fussy ones and can walk away leaving them happy.
She has sat with us drinking coffee with a prince & princess and at the other end of the scale, sat with us drinking Tea with gypsy's, she conducted herself in a manner that left all customers happy, So no matter the customer type, Shell has and can deal with them all.
Come September when its all hers, she will have my continued backing, for space reasons I will continue to produce and store her water, although she has already learnt about RO- systems including all the filters and DI, she maintains her own poles and can conduct running repairs, She Tests & loads the trailer with water each morning and makes sure the batteries are loaded and unloaded and re-charged at the end of the day.
She's now competent at using the trailer/van System and also her backpack system.
She has the personal backing of 2 retail managers and there knowledge is excellent and Just in case she ever needs them, her in-laws are Solicitors also her Mum who used to be an accountant.
She has no wish to expand or employ at present and if she needs help at work, she can call on myself or any one, or both of her sisters, who are both experienced Trad w/c's
Over the past 8 weeks she has also taken over the Organisation of all the work, she now does all the records including all the books for the dreaded taxman (thank God ;D ) Phew!
So after all the above ,if anyone including a woman thinks Michelle needs any tips or help for running a long standing and successful business? Please let her know, she doesn't pretend to know it all because non of us can claim that, but there are quite a few of us on here, who can claim the successful running of a long term business.

That was excellent and I apologise for making you type it all. Yes, i'm pretty sure that she will be a success (not that my opinion matters). Your description covered every eventuality I could think of.
The reasons you gave for obtaining a van were also exellent.
Yes, i'm dogmatic about vans, and hot water, and electric reels. But in this instance i believe it is only the van that matters. And at some point further down the line prepare to be pleasantly surprised about the van.
As for bossyness well i think it's great that she has a real passion for the family business and has the confidence to implement decisions even when they might not be the same as yours.
The best thing to do is make lots of money, then everyone is happy.

Don't apologise Clive, you know I value your opinion ;)
Shell has only one agreement with me and that's is if she doesn't like the Job then the business gets handed back to me.
She's even getting organised for Christmas :o I couldn't believe it when she place an order with the Boss yesterday to make all the customers Christmas cards :o I questioned it and got a blunt reply ;D So I'm letting her get on with it.
She also managed to secure a deal with a friend of hers for company Mugs for the best custy's with our company details and logo on, there supposed to be £7 each and she secured a deal for £3 each, I taught her well Clive ;D
She also has the 3 strikes and your out policy and is able to bite her tongue well.
Out of my 3 daughters, Shell is the right one to take over the business and I wish her a long and happy success with it.
As for the Van Clive there will be no pleasant supprises for me, I still don't like Vans ;D ;D
