Your exactly right Chris..........................why? because it is a thankless, very time consuming task that in all honesty has become worse and worse over the last 2 years.

I spend so much time deleting drivel, abusive or pointless comments instead of how it used to be, when you would spend hours reading interesting and informative topics.......that is what made this website forum so popular and useful and even addictive!

I have personally helped people on this forum, been to jobs with them and helped quote and hopefully given other window cleaners advice as needed, but all it seems to be now is constant digging at each other and both Ian and I have spent HOURS deleting rubbish and pointless postings.................and quite frankly....I can't be bothered with it anymore.

Trevor,

I'm curious, as a new member to this site (and enjoying it very much) I cant comment on how it used to be. But what do you feel has changed?

Is it newer members upsetting the apple cart or existing members in-fighting?

I'm a mod on another forum (totally unrelated to w/c and have been a member there for a few years) and they have some strict policies for newer members.

Do it once - you get a gentle reminder from Admin.
Do it twice - you get a second reminder with a link to the T&Cs
Do it a third time - you are banned for 1 week
Do it again - banned

Older members tend to get more leeway. As in any walk of life, some people just rub each other up the wrong way  ::) thats usually tolerated as long as it stays 'on topic' and doesnt descend into a slanging match.

I do agree, modding can be a thankless task. The only time people really see what mods do, is when there are no mods on a board!...watch the site turn into a free-for-all full of spam, porn, swearing and adverts. I've seen it happen and its not good.

you're the second one in as many days, DJW chucked it in too. Maybe you've got less in common with the forum than you used to have.
Can you think of a topic where we could help you now?
Probably not.

I have been in this industry for a long time, almost 18 years now, I operate a very successful business and have seen many things in my time, however, in all honesty, I still learn things on here all the time.

It's interesting to read about equipment people are using, problems people have had and how they have resolved them, there is an enormous amount of knowledge to be gained from this forum, it's just a shame we have some users who spoil it.

Yes I know every forum will have them, I understand that, but as a Mod I am expected to trawl thorugh the postings removing them, I can't just ignore them. However, as a user I can ignore them and use the forum for the information I need and go back to enjoying this forum.

If you ask the other Mods the lengths some people go to in order to wreak havoc, changing thier name, using different computers to log on, using aliases.........it's incredible and extremely sad, but hey, that's their choice and if they get pleasure out of wasting time and effort then that's their choice........I know what I would rather they did!

Doing a good job and following the rules, that so may others fail to follow, doesn't make you a jobs worth. It does means you have more respect for others than some do.
If members followed the rules more, then it would make the mods and Admins lifes a lot easier and would make for an even better forum.

Thanks Trevor and the other mods for the hard work you have all put in. Most people wouldn't even have noticed the editting, deletting, etc that goes on behind the scenes.

Regards
Mr H

Trevor.
I thank you for all your efforts over the past couple of years.  I've learned a lot from you and others.  I particularly liked the T & Cs you posted.  I did modify them a fair bit but they now form the basis of the way I work.
I hope that you continue to post as a member now that your mod hat has gone.
Title: Re: Moderator Required!

I think thats a bit unfair Trevor, I come and go under different names and none of them my own (only one at a time, and not for any decietfull reason).

I very often go off topic, and sometimes use mild abuse such as calling people stupid when they don't agree with me.

I have a couple of themes that I go on and on about (electric reels, hot systems, and wc as a business).

But you could say the same about many posters. Some are obsessed with Harris poles.

Anyway enough about other people it's now time for this weeks latest invention. For quite a while now Ive been using a harness over my head and one arm that attaches to the tap at the end of the reel so that it goes where I do. I walk out with it and I walk in with it.

My invention is that i've put a hook on this so that when the pole is closed the pole hose (as apposed to the reel hose) can be looped and put onto this hook so that it doesn't tangle or get trodden on.

Simple but effective.

Post by: Tosh on June 10, 2008, 09:46:44 pm
I was asked to be a mod, and was so for a year or two, but resigned, since I was probably more naughty than other posters.

Trev took over from me; he was keen-as-mustard at the time.

To be a moderator, you don't need to run an all-singing-and-dancing window cleaning business; the only requirement is to be level-headed, fair, and have good communication skills; and a bit of a thick-skin too; since members will take a dig at you now-and-again and you just have to shut-up and take it on the chin.  (I personally love getting a good 'digging'; it means I've had a good 'bite'.)

You also need to have a 'care' for this forum; that's important; it'll take about an hour-per-day of your time; a half hour in the morning and another half-hour in the evening; but it's okay to 'stay away', since there's other mods who'll cover.  And generally, you'll get an e-mail alerting you to any problems from members reporting offensive stuff from the 'report to mod' icon.

And, as a mod, you don't 'ban' anyone, but you can get them 'bannished' and more usually you amend, delete or steer topics away from upsetting someone; and you'd be surprised at what upsets some members!  ;D  You also get access to a 'mod area forum' where they talk about us; honest!

Personally, I think Squeaks would make a good mod, he fits the criteria, but he'd have to stand-back out of some postings.  The thing is, being a 'mod' somehow carries some weight; even when you're typing drivel; which many of us do; me included.

But if you're a professional-minded, sensible, fair, honest, non-argumentative type person, with good communication skills and willing to give four-or-five hours a week to a corking site; e-mail Trev.

You could be the next mod we all give a good 'digging'. ;D

It could also, maybe, help you in a professional-work capacity; Phillip Hanson, the mod that I took over from is now the editor of Professional Window Cleaning Magazine, and that only happened because of his moderation ability on this site!  ;)

I've been here since the beggining; this site hasn't changed, apart from we've got an 'off topic' area; oh and it's really busy with posts every few seconds.

Choosing a mod:

Why don't you put it to the vote of the members. All those interested in becoming a mod, put your name forward on this thread. Start a 'mod election vote' poll and whoever wins, becomes the new mod. Democracy is the fairest way.

Thank you Trev, I can see why being a mod is a thankless task, you have to be a police man, judge, referee and a priest, have to have the patience of a saint, and be objective at all times.
Where does freedom of expression end and offensive posting begin? Make the wrong call and your your either being too heavy handed, or not doing your job.
Moderating is a job that has to be done by someone though, or this great site would degenerate.

We all have our own ideas about things, that doesn't mean we are always right, others have their own ideas too, and we should all respect them.
We are lucky enough to have some very successful businessmen posting on here, people we can all learn a lot from.
Educating the opposition is frowned upon amongst the business elite, and that for me is what makes this site unique, successful window cleaners with a great deal of practical experience are willing to share it, and offer sound advice to those beginning their own business careers.
We have just lost  another good moderator, Maybe it's time we started moderating ourselves, agree to disagree and leave it at that, respect the views of others, and refrain from hitting back with our keyboards just because we don't share the same views.
Thanks again Trev, lets hope your resignation is a wake up call to us all. Dai

I agree with a poll.
It's the fairest way.

It shouldn't be mandatory though.
If that person doesn't want it, then it goes to the next highest vote, and so on...

What i meant by what the site has become, is that one of the reasons given for the vacancy was this.
I agree it's probably no different to how it's always been. The babble of fourteen thousand voices must be quite overwhelming at times.

Vote? vote for a favourite?

They should all be mods, five or six of them. That's what's required.

A good mod more than anything just has to sit back, watch  and only intervene when neccessery.

People with a vested interest in selling goods or a service is not the right person.

Let's be nice. (I'll try).

Window washers (Ian) if you were playing blind mans buff I would say that you are that hot that you are on fire.

The last time I looked the position of chairman of the org you mention was vacant. From memory I believe Dave is secretary (at the moment).

Yes, it is hypocritical to say a supplier can't be a mod in these circumstances.

So on the basis of your experience would that rule window washers out because he provides services?
(he designs custom made window cleaning websites tweaked to soar search engines, and has a national web directory resource where he directs work to local window cleaners)

Considering your position i think that's a bit rich.

See what i mean, as a mod it is hard to have an associated interest in window cleaning without being attacked.

I moderate the non related section and no longer promote the APWC on any forum for those very reasons.

Mods are fair game and if you are selling a service or goods it can become a double edged sword.

As for Window Washers I wouldnt like to comment on any individual, apart from the redirecting of work is a paid service is it not ?

Moderators are allowed opinions but you have to think long and hard before you post that opinion.

If you look back at Trevors post he got a verbal bashing, I can fully understand why he stood down, Ian Giles regularly comes under fire as do I and the other mods.

Anyway I have got thick skin so can take it.

Well share the burden then, and if it's that awfull don't guard it so jealously!!!!!!

Reading between the lines Mike Boxall will take suggested names under advisement. In other words you and Ian will have a major say in who does and who doesn't get the gig.

Give people a go, if they can't hack it, hoof 'em, but give them a chance.

Tosh; there have been a couple of times -poo too etc when Mike has been wrong. The mods hid behind, this is his site he does what he wants.

If squeaky gets it by the way your in for it!!! ;D

As for a tough time if this has come across from me as a personal attack I apologise. All the more reason to spread the burden.

I'm not sure what situation you're talking about, but I do know that when Mike asks someone to 'mod', he gives no rules, guidelines or instructions; he just sends you a card at Christmas.

In the beginning, Mike wanted this site to be a quality window cleaning resource; no chat, no fun; just pure window cleaning; but has since relaxed this rule with the introduction of the off-topic area and the current mods now understand that most window cleaning posts start off 'on topic' and then invariably wander; they're here to ensure that offensive posts are removed mostly.

And if you want to be a mod, e-mail Mike and ask him; my only reservation about you is that you sound a bit over-zealous.  That would be a turn-off to many on this forum.

However, a volunteer is worth ten-pressed men; so send that e-mail!

Like everything else I do I would be brilliant at it. I mean it, quite brilliant.

However, I think ww, shiner, and squeaks are good representations of the forum and a better choice.

And then there is always yourself Tosh.

I'm glad to see that you have gotten your old gusto back anyway.

I think Ian Giles does a pretty good job on his own when he's not wandering round some cricket pitch!

You need someone like him, I have no idea what he's like in the real world but on here he's a pretty good example 99% of the time.  No messing, makes a judgement call at a good time, when absolutely necessary explains why he has deleted or stepped in on a topic.  Pretty sound.

Only problem is when he posts his own opinion on something - usually half a page long! :o ;D

Keep it up Ian

Anyway I have got thick skin so can take it.

Dave, You know what I do on weekends throughout the football season, believe me, I am not standing down due to "stick" as this is a walk in the park compared to that, however, I am simply resiging because of the amount of postings we are having to delete that in all honesty shouldn't have even been written, you know yourself how many abusive, pointless and off topic postings we remove!!

I just don't have the time anymore??

I agree Trev

I think i counted about 10 reported posts on one day last week and I have only just started recieving the email complaints from your section in the last week or two so can imagine how many you have had to deal with over the last couple of years.

Just to prepare you Dave, l have on average 3/5 reported posts per day not to mention the one's who don't get reported that you have to scan for.

I think my worst was about 6 months ago when a certain topic served me with 18 reported post notifications!!

Good luck mate!

Good reply Dave, by the way I was not attacking you I was just making a point.

Ian
