some people say declare all income, some people say tips are a perk, some people feel the rest of us should pay tax to support their life style.
where do you stand?
-
I can't comment because only one person has voted and you'll know it was me.
Doh!!

Of course you should support my lifestyle Tax? whats that? being serious are you working for the tax man or what?!!!!
-
"Declare?" I don't understand ??? Am I missing something here?
-
Totally honest but not with women. Little white lies and mystery keeps them intrigued and on their toes :)
-
"Declare?" I don't understand ??? Am I missing something here?
I think he means the fAgs and booze you get in France when you reach customs! Right?!
-
don't work for taxman :o, but read a post about someone's "rainy day fund", just wondered how many others felt like that. I don't think tips should be declared, but I spent years working in hotels, and the taxman just asumed you got tips.
you wouldn't declare a couple of tinnies, so you shouldn't have to declare "get yourself a pint", but all money worked for should be declared.

How cool is that! I've been censored! I put fAgS as in cigarettes and have been censored. I know what CIU thought I meant by fAgS i.e Batty boy!

I was only joking mate!!! I think that tips should be tax free IMO. Funnily enough did you see in the news about the restaurants that were using tips to count towards the minimum wage? It seems some of them didn't think that the employee should be rewarded for their hard work LMAO!

what a completely stupid post get a life

fAgs

Waste of time. ::)
Everyone knows that 99% of self employed people don't declare it all.
Everyone also knows that 99% of people aren't going to admit it.
...and don't say "...but I do!", because you're a big fat liar.
-
in my eyes tips are a gift. a christmas present if you like.
-
My 1st accntnt told me I should declare xmas tips , I thought b******s to that

Where do you get your figures from.
I declare every penny that comes through my business, I try to get all my customers to give cheques so there is very little cash involved.
Concentrate on improving your turnover instead of concentrating hiding a few quid from the taxman.
Its always the same ones who take money under the table who dont go very far in business, i see it in all walks of life not just in window cleaning

Why would you deliberately pay more tax then? ???
Can't see how it would stop your business going so far.

From where I stand it looks to me like it is the ones who are prepared to bend the rules who get the furthest. And I can qualify that, I personally know two millionaires who if they played it straight wouldn't be millionaires.

8) Declare everything 8)
Sleep well at night... Let the tax man come! :) :) :)
One easy way to avoid this tips situation is not to accept them! ::)
I don't do Christmas, so I would be a hypocrite to accept Christmas tips! 8)
All my customers know this and accept it! 8)
Some of my customers give a bottle of wine as an end of year gift... this I accept! 8)
Each to their own! 8)
Fair play to you ;D some do and some dont ;)

I remember a milkman telling a tv reporter how much he made in tips at xmas, guess what milkmen/women were then taxed on estimated tips.
:(
-
i do believe you have too pay your way in socioty and people who dont really do annoy me because why should i and they dont... tips is a different matter because this is not something that i am actually doing a job for this is a treat, a present, have a beer on me type thing not here is an extra few quid for doing something extra...
-
And there was me thinking this was going to be a topic on how honest are you with your comments on this forum.
I was ready to say that a good 70% of comments posted where huge exagerations but insterad we have people talking themselves into an investigation by our friends at the IR who read sites like this one.
It must be once a month I put out a warning on here to that effect but still people boast about not declaring, tips, presies etc. If it's part of your business then it must be declared full stop. Don't you lot know the rules?
-

So you don't bother filling in that part of the forms then, that go back for tax assessment?

I dont know what the so called problem is ? I wouldnt mind paying loads to taxman ! If I were it would mean that I was earning a good living ;D . By the way there is a difference between being dishonest , and playing by the rules ie claiming all your tax entitlements ;D

Spot on. We are window cleaners not grave diggers.
I'm sure squeaky has got his figures back to front. ;D
Anyway, to all those who encourage the tax man to come and investigate you, keep up the good work. There can only be so many investigations due to manpower and to attract them to yourselves means they will be too busy to come after the likes of me.
I sleep well at night and haven't looked over my shoulder for years now.
Long live the rogues!! You make life easier for the rest of us. :)

what goverment have you seen that has been honest, none of of them, they are all at it, the more honest you are the poorer you are, fact,

Yes but until it actually happens no one believes that it can happen.

i dont fill in my forms i have somebody do it for me and dont make me out to be some sort of cowboy because i declare my work.... ALL OF IT. and remind me when somebody gives me a box of choclate or a bottle of wine at christmas to send the tax man a glass or a couple of chocs
-
what goverment have you seen that has been honest, none of of them, they are all at it, the more honest you are the poorer you are, fact,
It's true. But an accountant has claimed for many things that i use for my job, like clothing for example, which i have now found unsuitable for work and only good for wearing in social situations now.
I declare for other reasons than a gaining a fuzzy feeling by helping out my rip off rulers.

;D
I admit i don't declare any cups of tea that have been provided which saves me going to a cafe.
-

Sorry to dissagree , but that is not true ! If you are honest people will respect you more , give you more work , and ultimatly you can sleep soundly at night .
-
mark drew your funny, oh and by the way my mums a bar maid on the books and when she gets a tip she is straight on the phone to the tax man telling him exactly how much she got (NOT).
this is a stupid topic its no ones business but the person who it concerns and some people on here wont other people to get into trouble when it wouldnt make the slightest bit of difference to them (doo gooders).
everybody bends the rules a little you would be daft not too, i bought a ladder a year ago and diddnt put it through my books there for diddnt get a reduction in my tax, there are a million things i could be claiming for instance my woman doing my books but do i (NO)

rich folk sleep at night, the ones who know how to get roud it, not to fiddle the tax, but legaly know how to, thats the trick,
-
mark drew your funny,
You and a few others clearly can't take a hint when it's put right in front of your face. Well done for possibly putting your mother and that pub up for investigation.
Keep up the good work ;D
-
not worried mate... have nothing too be worried about what so ever... :P
anyway change of subject my tank is full and i diddnt think it was going too fill because it is filling considerably slower than usual ;D

Do you think this had something to do with why he is upset? He has now deleted his account. Or do you think he was the taxman LOL!

i think he may of realised this forum can be crap :(

To be honest is the best policy ! Never did science at school :-\ But if you are going to run a business , you have to follow a formula . If you do your homework and follow through with your business plan , then you are starting as you mean to go on . If you deviate from the plan , and want to cut costs and lie about your earnings then that is up to you !
-

That's not always the case. How would your customer know whether you delare 50% 60% or 100% of your income?

Give it a rest with the paronia. I have two other businesses which turn over alot more than my window cleaning. Two acountants and one ex tax inspector all agree the IR is in absolute turmoil right now. I doubt they have time for browsing clean it up, never mind going to the trouble of getting a court order to get the members IP address from Mike, then another to get the ip address resolved to an actual address from the relevant ISP before any investigation could even start. I am not sure the tax his mam is avoiding paying on her tips would justify that expenditure.

You are trying to associate honesty with your taxes with getting more work. I am saying that is rubbish because your customer will not have a clue (unless you are blatant) what you are declaring compared to anyother guy so it won't come into the equasion.
-
im off to bed people (read enough) for tonight anyway :D...

My brother in law told me a story the other day. His window claner works 7 days and usually cleans him on a Sunday. The last time he was boasting about how with his benifits and window ceaning he was pulling in 800 a week. He obviously didn't realise my bil's wife worked for the IR and my partner, his sister works for the Jobcentres!
It is the mouthy boasful ones that in real life get themselves caught. They are far easier to track down that some guy/gal on a forum.

I prefer to play it straight too Dave. I nearly lost a job over it recently too. The guy wanted a discount for cash but I told him that however he paid me it was going through the books so no discount for him.

I think you're even supposed to declare the value of the wine in your books. I don't think it's right that tips should have to be declared but I do it anyway because those are the regs. I can see where IR are coming from though because if they weren't taxed, the numbers could be manipulated so that a large percentage of your income would be tips. In order to avoid a nightmare scenario (for them) of policing what counts as a tip and what doesn't, they just have a blanket rule that all tips are taxable.
-
why am i not surprised that mr squeaky clean is dishonest.
Whoever just said that those who are doshonest tend not to do very well, has hit the nail on the head.
Those who dont declare their full earnings and dont pay their dues are often the same ones who will then moan that prescription charges, tax on fuel, etc etc is too high.
Maybe if all the theiving scoundrel operators paid their way our taxes wouldnt be so high.
Absolutely detest people who fiddle the government. really really gets my goat. May a plague of lucusts infest your underpants.

You're naive if you EVER think that would happen.....
They'll just waste it like they have always done.

why dont we just drop this topic and agree to disagree that the goverment ARE crap and rip you off, some people pay all, some people pay most and some people pay little or none, thats the way it is and thats the way it will always be, i personally like to pay my way but what other people do is there business and theres alone....

I personally declare everything, as it is far too risky not to. As window cleaners we are one of the most likely groups of people to be investigated by the taxman!! It's just not worth it!!!! :(

Don't be such a hypocrite Toilet Clean.
That picture above summed you up.
I'm doing perfectly well thankyou, but I don't think you are.
That's why you come on here spouting tripe and putting people down.
Because you're insecure and feel you have to act big.
The only big thing you are is a big liar. ;)

im not bullying here but i do declare everything, im only young, and have found being self employed that lenders borrowers mortages wont touch me yet, i only got an accountant last year so gonna build up some good books next few years then ill be happy...then im not declaring a penny...joking joking :P

self employed that lenders borrowers mortages wont touch me yet,
it is for this reason that i declare all my earnings. I have a self cert mortgage at the moment but would like to go mainstream as it will save me money in the long haul.
-
See it's not all good working for yourself - Credit can be difficult to get or where you can get it you end up paying silly interest rates.
-
I would rather earn a lot and pay a lot of tax, than earn little and pay little or no tax.
Tax is tax, we all know what we have to pay and that should reflect in what we charge the customers.
-

Which is all well and good but most of (my) customers seem to assume I don't pay tax ::)
I always get: "I've not been to the bank, can I give you a cheque this time?"
I actually prefer cheques as they have to be banked...cash just seems to get spunked!
-
'Spunked'? Yikes, puts me off handling cash!

I was thinking that too. Will now always wash my hands after handling cash.

i tell you what you have to admit after a night of collecting your hands feel disgusting, smell of money on them is horrid :(

Yes always wear protection when handling cash! Cheques are different, must fire blanks!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I ask for cheques where poss, it helps me with my accounting.
They are easier to trace with payment disputes etc.
I hate it when custies call round my house ,with cash I have people turning up who post cash with no name on it, people who give it to my kids and say give this money to your daddy.
Then there is the ones who chase you round tescos or collar you in the pub.
I try to tell them to pay me at there door or send me a cheque in the post.

Thats why we shop out of town now! Being serious we use asda now, My misses works for tesco and we have found that asda is cheaper than tescos even with her staff discount and there is the added bonus that there isn't one in town the nearest is Gloucester so I dont get this hassle though! Isn't it funny sometimes the lengths that customers will go to pay you. Some people seem to worry that they haven't paid you and will call at your house or stop you in the street. I wish that all my customers had this dedication!
-
I declare everything including tips for a few reasons.
It's law, even tips are classed as earnings.
Religious belief and a clean conscience.
Being scared of the tax man. The law for tax is different to criminal law. Criminal law is innocent until proven guilty, with tax you have to prove your innocence other wise you are guilty. If you are investigated by the tax man it will be a much more pleasant experience if you have been honest.
Simon.

If you do get investigated by the tax man it's usually because they have concerns with your accounts, therefor it wont be pleasant :'(

Call me a cynic but I think that some (most) of the 35% who've voted they declare all earnings and tips are little fibbers ;D

"Some people seem to worry that they haven't paid you and will call at your house or stop you in the street" ;D
On the 24 May this year we, (my wife & I) were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary at a lovely little restaurant on Deal sea-front (Three Compasses, I highly recommend it!)
Went outside to make a phone-call (check on baby sitter)
Along comes customer... Oh sorry I have not paid, I am so sorry... Can I pay you now?
No it's alright...
No I insist... He pays me for next time as well!
GREAT, NO I MEAN IT! 8)
Only trouble was... It now look like I can't afford the bill and had to phone someone for money! :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

In a world full of deceit, where lies seem to be the norm, is it any wonder people feel like this!
It is our own fault though...
Think about it, it's installed from childhood up... Father Christmas... :o Tooth Fairy... :o Easter Bunny! :o
Get a little older... I am going around my friends for a sleep-over (going to mates and then off to disco!) :o
Lie to Children! :o
Children lie to parents (Adults)! :o
Parents (Adults) lie to Authorities! :o

Have any of your 'staff' had to go on one of these stupid 13 week courses?
Govt should realise we're trying to run a business.

As quoted above
"Call me a cynic but I think that some (most) of the 35% who've voted they declare all earnings and tips are little fibbers" ;D

When I left my tooth under the pillow, in the morning there was a pair of pliers and a note that read "I'll be back for the rest tonight".

If you are investigated by the tax man it will be a much more pleasant experience if you have been honest.
Simon.
If you do get investigated by the tax man it's usually because they have concerns with your accounts, therefor it wont be pleasant :'(
"Usually" being the operative word I think. Although most investigations are caused by apparent discrepancies in the figures, there is a chance of being pulled for a random check too - though I understand that this is less likely.

does this mean the taxman doesn't exist? ??? ??? ???
-
obviously he does exist or else we wouldnt have to pay him twice a year well in my case four because i never have it all on time :D
-
You'll all get an enquiry thats certain.
What may surprise you is that everyone has to cough up. No matter how good you are at the end you will get a bill and you will have to pay it.
They enquire into one year only. Arrive at a figure that you agree with and then take it back seven years.(i'm simplifying).
It's laughable that some of the supposedly honest posters on this thread think that they would be fireproof.
-
so discount have you had an enquiry ???
-
I haven't been enquired for wc because i've only been going a year, but yes i've had two.
I also know quite a few people who've had them. They go on for months, sometimes over a year, and they can destroy peoples lives and leave them very bitter. You might gather from my posts that i also like to read business books, and all the big boys such as gordon ramsey, richard branson etc have had them too. They don't fare any better than the rest of us.In jeffery Archers prison diaries many of his cell mates had had them.
He tells a good story of a restaurant in london, a famous one, that didn't accept any credit cards and only took cash. The owner was quite brilliant, none the less the bill was two million and four years.
If you get looked at they most probably would ask you to account for your cash.
-
Ive heard from other people that even honest people when investigated by the tax man will have something which the tax man wont quite agree wth no matter how hard they try to comply with the law.

Rubbish, they can't prove what you take in cash.
I've never heard of anyone investigated either, so your "all get an enquiry" is absolute garbage. ::)
-
The Taxman is all powerful and has many weapons in it's armoury and to dismiss their powers is a very blinkered view...The Taxman requires YOU to disprove it's assesments.
They will investigate eveything about you...as far as possible your every transaction/purchase....and when you really think about it....it is very hard to hide regular large amounts of cash unless you're life is completely cash based and even then...it's hard.
Dave.
-
Good old thick as a brick squeaks.
Unless you pay every single bill by credit card and never use cash you can't account for your personal outgoings; They can, and have cash tests that have been refined over many years to asses just how much you spend. They then ponder whether this matches your income. You don't have to agree, that doesn't matter, but if you cooperate, and are honest the bill you get is likely to be less.
The reason we will all get one is two fold.
One they are getting rid of low level clerical staff because computers and online tax filing is making them unnecessary, whilst at the same time upping the number of actual tax inspectors who carry out these enquiries.
And two, these tax enquiries are very productive financially because they often look at people for the first time after they have been going ten years or so.

Squeaky, they are customs and excise and they don't need to "prove" anything - what they do is compare what you would have spent with your declared income over a given period.
They make reasonable allowances for cash spending on things such as shopping, the pub, fuel etc. If you've spent more than you've earned they ask further questions about savings, gifts and they check your answers ...
When it all starts falling apart because your 1st clever answer is seen to be baloney no offer of tea and two sugars and chocolate hob nobs will stop them tracking further.
At best you get a bill as big as a pelican's which you take out a mortgage on, at worst you get done for fraud.
If you are dishonest then your only hope is that you are such a tiny minnow that you aren't worth the dosh to follow up. But if you get a random check "you'll be sweating like an inhabitant of Mississippi on a sexual assault charge!" ;D
And yes, I do know of a w/c that got checked ...
-
The retauranteur who shared his story with Archer was brilliant, and had outwitted several investigation teams. Also in nick were several accountants.
-
All my bills are paid by direct debit.
Any spending money is my missus's wages.
I don't use plastic apart from fuel, and that's straight out the account.
I don't pay anything cash.
What's wrong with that then?
They can't just assume, and expect you to pay up.
What if they reckon you earn double what you do? ::)
Crap, they have to prove it.
-
Squeeky
You really do amaze me at times !!
Why is everything always "crap" you dont agree with ?
So you dont keep a rounds book and you dont take cash. The taxman is going to believe that isnt he ?
-
I think the point with the IR is that they come down heavily on people who they feel are taking the pee. If you're outgoings are say £20k a year (net money) and you're declaring £15k (which after tax and NI is nearer £11k) in earnings then the shortfall of £9k has to be explained.
Now it could be that the wife also works, or you have savings or a very friendly bank manager in which case the IR would probably be satisfied.
But if none of the above apply then they start digging big-time, wanting to know the ins and outs of a duck's arse.
A mate of mine got investigated (not in our industry) over some expenses he claimed which the IR thought a bit "sniffy"....it went on for months and months. Nearly made the poor man have a nervous breakdown.
I'd sooner be kosher and sleep well....nothing to do with "honesty"...just fear!

This is just makeie up stuff. What does 10 years have to do with anything when you are only required to hold records for 6? You are making it up as you go along!
It is absoultley rubbish to think we will ever 'all' get one. Have you any idea how labour intensive it is to run a tax inspection? Have you any idea how many self employed people there are out there and how many staff and £££ it would take to investigate eveyone? They even have a rule that if they find any discrepancies and it amounts to under £100 they won't even bother asking you for it.
