Title: Does resin stop working
Post by: MNWC on June 06, 2008, 05:52:24 pm
Changed my resin today

The water from membranes was comeing out at 10.Checked to see if it had gone down to 000 but no it was coming out of resin cannister at 10 ppm  :o

The resin i had was in the garage, in a tupperware box, wrapped  many times in a black bin bag.

When i opened the tupperware box it had all condensation on inside, and had the same texture as dry sand

the resin itself is about 4/5 Months old.Got it from Gardiners, they might have had it for the same time

Does it have a shelf life

i was told it does go off, but i have had mine in the original bag tightly sealed and it is still ok, i would say because it has condensation in it , it has taken some of the goodness out of the resin, i might be wrong, i have to change my resin every fill up in my ibc tank, but water round here is well hard, 499 out of the tap, but still manage to get it down to 000.

Resin can last for many years, when you open a bag of resin you need to squeeze the air out of the bag and seal tight. The bag that the resin comes in is air tight, you have an inner bag and outer bag. This only applies to some makes.

If the bag is not seled tight then the resin will absord the moisture from the air making it spent.

Judging from how you have stored it a bin bag is not an air tight bag, its is porous. Hence it looks like moisture has crept in making the resin spent.

Yes Tulsion is virgin, nuclear grade. The same spec as Dowex and Sybron which Gardiners sell.

There is not much difference in all 3.

When the TDS reading from my single Di polishing unit was 5 ppm I replaced it with new but saved the old resin (because I didn't know how to dispose of it!).

It was just dumped into a big plastic bucket in the garage.

By the time I had 25kg of the stuff, I had bought 2 x 11 litre Di bottles.

I filled them with the old (but not fully used up) resin (which by now had almost turned to powder) and it still brouht the TDS down to 0ppm for about 30 houses

I was well chuffed!
