Depends on the company size but smaller companies try to make an appointment to see the manager/owner. If it is a larger company the purchasing manager is who to give all your attention to.

Don't just drop leaflets with commercial it is a waste of time and don't worry to much about competitors commercial is more competitive and all that about treading on anothers toes goes out the window.

When I was a salesman ( many moons ago ) I used to ask to see the boss , if you can get pass the secretary you have cracked it ! If she ( the secretary ) asks what your business is , tell her it is a personal matter . I had a few job offers from bosses of firms because I got past their secretary LOL ;D

Another tip of mine is it's not what you know who you know. My biggest commercial job came off a customers son. He wanted a window cleaner so she put him onto me. I did his windows and when he finished he told me he was impressed with what I did and then told me that the company he worked for was after a window cleaner! I then got the job (and it's a biggie!). Since then where I can I ask my customers (subtle of course!)what they do for a living and if where they work they need a window cleaner. So far by doing this I have got a doctors, 8 shops, 2 factory/units and 4 office blocks. So network and ask customers. You'll be surprised what some of them do and how willing they are to help you get a job (provided they like you of course!) :D

Small commercial units, then your fine and can cavess on the day, anything bigger and your have to send a letter to the right person and then phone them up, receptions are trained to stop cold calling

Which is usually the purchasing manager/dept.

It can be! also the facilities manager, building owner, landlord, MD, it can be a mine field getting commercial work, best way is to get them to phone your by advertising, as I have lot count the times I have had my time wasted on price shoppers! as commercial is very much about price!

Just ask to see the organ grinder ( godfather in mafia terms ) . If you manage to get to the top man , do your pitch , and if you draw a blank ask them for advice !

Yeah and if i dare say it, if you are ruthless you could clean up by undercutting the competition- they are always looking for someone cheaper. Trouble is that if you do then you will end up with a load of quite poorly priced work and a load of clients who are willing to drop you as soon as someone cheaper comes along no matter how good you are! Tough one commercials. Final bit of advice is don't forget your domestics. Commercial work is better paid but you usually have to wait for your money and usually the bigger the company the more lax they are at paying you on time. Domestics allow you to maintain a decent cash flow and commercial makes the real money. A good mix of both and your onto a winner.

Commercials more often than not, prefer to come to you, via advertising. They have dozens of canvassers and reps knocking on their door for one thing and another. Once you're in the door, treat the people like your domestics, always polite and courtious and don't be afraid to talk. Remember, everyone has got friends, even ar****le MD's and you can't beat recomendation.
