Use a bunjy round a bannister but wrap a cloth round first to stop the ends scratching the varnish

Don't use a t/m but always carry plenty towels to tie around hoses and bannisters, sometimes loop the hose over, but with plenty towelling for security.

The towels have never let me down and even with the additional pull of a t/m this should be adequate.

If you get involved with elasticated luggage grips etc, I feel there is a greater danger of rubbing.

Go to Aldi's! They sell twisty wires coated in decent quality foam and in different lengths for a few quid. If you get the longer ones you can wrap one end round the hose and one round the bannister to keep the hose away from paintwork.

we use the twisty thingies from aldi too, which has just reminded we need some

more so i hope they still do them  ;D

I find they are also good for securing things temporarily in the van like the sebo

and vac !

I use the Super strap from Hydramaster. It can be used to tie your hoses to a window or a banister and when you are wanding it can be wrapped around your waist to stop the hoses from pulling. The smaller hose hook is good but will not go around the 2 1/2 " hose.

Use the "Stair Climber" as supplied
by Joe Bristor of CoolCuff fame.  Works great  when requiring hoses to hold on upper floors and also makes stair cleaning that much easier

i agree with elliot cleaning, if you can be bothered to order from joe bristor, the cool-cuff man, the stair-climber is the dogs doo-dahs, it's double sided stretch velcro that wraps around both vac and sol hose and then it has a clip connector for securing it to whatever is at hand, door handle, banister, whatever.
don't order just one, get two or three, they don't cost much and your bound to lose one!

John Kelly at Restormate has got some dayglow yellow velcros that you can joint together, wrap around your hoses and around the bannister etc, work very well, would be even better if they came in longer lengths.

They also do the foam wrapped wire things and velcros with a hook on to the bannister.

joe, coolcuffs.net i think, but i don't know how up-to-date the site is, it might be a case of e-mailing him and ask the price of them but they weigh nothing so postage is not a problem
