Title: Large van or small van + Trailer
Post by: pingu on May 24, 2008, 07:17:23 pm
With the current fuel pricing looking like it will continue to rise and rise...a thought...

Would it be better to have a Small van....with say a 400 litre tank...and a trailer with a 250litre tank for days when your busy...I do not imagine that most people here will use much more than 400 litres per day every day....

I am thinking about a peugeot pug or the like with a 400 litre tank and using a trailer when I need more....on those busy days. I have recently fitted a water meter to my van setup (650l tank) to watch my daily water usage over the next year....

So my real question is ....when pulling a trailer is it more cost effective than just loading the van to capacity..I hope this makes some sense.

Also as a point of note, here in Holland you're road taxed is based upon the weight the normal vech is on the road...so each month a small van will cost less in tax than say a transit...

Cheers
Dave.

i like the idea with the trailer, if its cheaper for you why not, i think its more efficient rather than all the weight in a van, prefferably a twin axle braked trailer so all the load is over the axles. I use a trailer, towed by 1.6 estate, its cheaper than a van for me, and im putting sign writing on

I have a trailer mounted powerwashing setup with a 1000 litre tank on it,..... It does the job, but I wouldn't want to be using it every day. Parking, turning etc etc is quite an ordeal, and even with the tank only 1/4 full it's impossible to manoeuvre by hand. Also the time taken hitching up in the morning, and packing up in the evenings is more than you'd expect.

Now I've got a bigger van I am genuinely considering a 2nd tank,.. another 400 litres that I can fill with pure water when I'm having a busy day on the windows,... tap water when I'm powerwashing,... and leave it empty in between!

Ive been thinking of getting rid of my van and getting a trailer myself.

I get by on 250ltr of water most days so my car being a 2.2 turbo diesel has plenty of power to pull a trailer.

But if its going to be a pain may get myself a smaller van

And its a lot better on fuel than my van.
