my lad has just finnished school , and is going to collage on a mechanics course ( kerching ) ! He will be doing four days a week , and needs some income on his day off . I would love to give him a days work , but wondered if it would be complicated with the inland revenue , and national insurance etc ! Any one on here employ family part time ?

Phone the IR and ask them to send you out an employers pack. They've also got a helpline which is very good

dont kids now get paid to go to college?
if employing anyone you have to have employers liability insurance, I have employed family before, also worked for them it is just the same as anyone else.
I think the limit before ni and tax is about £100

Yes i understand you have to have it, just trying to work out if after all the expence , it would be worth employing my son for a day . I dont mind giving him money , I just love his company and would like to help him out ;D

In regards to employers liability insurance there is one main exemption applicable to small businesses. The exemption is the one relating to family businesses. If your employees are close relations, (parent, child, spouse, grandchild etc.), you do not have to take out the insurance unless your family business has been incorporated into a limited company.

I read about this sometime ago, but do not know the ins and outs of it. always best to check at source to be totally covered. Tam do you know anymore details on this?

Best to get him covered with public liability though in case of the odd mishap.

If you want to do it get him to register as self employed and then go into partnership with you. The insurance cost is then lower as he would have his own. He can then go on his course, work 1 day for you and during the hols too! Never know he may just want to stay as a window cleaner, but make sure that he completes the course as you can never have too many strings to your bow! ;D

For 1 day a week you could just get him insured for p/l and either pay him cash or in kind by reducing his board costs.

Nice post mate ;D Want my son to have the things I never had , like having to manually put the plates into the dishwasher , etc ! Want him to learn a trade like mechanics , but like people say on here , the money in this game is very good ! Funny but peoples perceptions of window cleaners are very low ! I am really thinking of my sons future , and to be honest he couldnt get any better than to work hard in this here trade and retire early ! Talk about eureka moment !

my dad started out like most on here with a beat up austin van a point and a 35' ladder. he used to do the odd day cash in hand for other local guys while he built his own stuff up. he took on a few big contracts from guys who he met working for other w/c. after a while my uncle started working for him till he found something better to do (lol) a few years later he got lad to work for him in replace of my uncle. every leave i had i used to drive home from germany to see my girlfriend and while she was at work i used to go in with me old man just to stop me getting board and spend time with him as he wernt around when i was a kid. very quickly i learnt to love it! the freedom of being out side all the time, diffrent view every day, diffrent faces. i decided to leave my awsome carier in the army to work along side the old git. he tought me every thing he knew and some and we became best friends. i dont work for him no more because his company is far to big for me to have a place in it and i see no future there for me because he will sell it on when the time comes and i dont want to be to old to start from fresh but i can say my dad showing me the wonderfull world of w/ctook me away from a VERY promising carrear in the army and i'm glad.
people ask do you like window cleaning and i say NO!

my lil bro is at uni doing a degree in film studys :o.
how can you do a degree in watching films? ive had him in with me for a day and he liked it but wont give it a try. he gets pooy with me when i tell him how much i earn but still he wont consider working with me just for a bit to see if he likes it.
i've big plans for my business and would happly train my bro and give him a % of the business (which is what my farther wouldn't do for me) but still he dont want to know. instead he want to become a teacher. teaching english to our ever growing imegrant population. :'(
i've told him when he grows out of it there will always be a place for him, but it really sadens me.
