Title: Builders clean help
Post by: Jimmy1 on May 19, 2008, 03:44:27 pm
Help- ive been asked to go and quote a buiders clean. Ive no photos but ive been told there are 1000 + panes of glass. 3 storeys high approx 25ft) . Although a builders clean ive been told there is no cement, just dust and stickers on the windows. Ive 5 questions for anybody whose done this type of work before:

Roughly what would you charge?
How long would you think this job would take?
I carry 700 litres - would this be enough on high flow?
What about the stickers? is the only way to go up a ladder to remove these?
What chemicals (if any) would I use to remove the stickers?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Tip - Don't do it!!!

 ;)

Andy

PS. If you do decide to do it then don't be fooled by them saying that there is no cement on the windows... There will be!

Also... You won't be able to get the stickers off the windows only using WFP???

I would recommmend thoroughly inspecting the building before providing a quote.

Assuming they are telling the truth about no cement the stickers will still be a bugger to get off. The recent sun/hot weather will have baked them on and the only way of removing them will be up there on ladders with loads of soapy water and a scrapper.

Never could understand why the window fitters can't be arsed to remove the stickers at the time...lazy buggers >:(

Not if he has other work he could be getting on with.

Everytime i used to do a builders clean i always felt like i was doing them a favour, you could tell numptyody else on site would even think of having a go.They even used to leave the blue plastic on the outside of the window frames, labels concrete everywhere.Get some easy work and let them find someone more desparate.

I have to agree with NWH. Every time I've taken one on half way through I'm thinking: "What have I bloody well let myself in for."

No more BCs for me thanks!

To be honest Alex I don't want the hassle of subbing. Easier for me to just swerve it and give a few names of other w/c'ers and if they want it and earn good £s then I'm V happy for them. If they want to give me a small cup-of-tea for the intro then even better....pigs may fly ;D

I do loads of builders cleans.

Some sites we do will not allow ladders so we use a scraper on a pole for the stickers and WFP them.

If they still have tape and/or film is still on we usually use a cherry picker.

Other site's we do they are happy for you to use ladders as long as they are used safely.

Also if the work is for a property developer you will probably need to get a cscs test done and get a cscs card.

Also if on building site you will need steel toe cap boots, hard hat and hi-vis.
