Just wanted to give a plug to WW's site. This is W/C related. Hope you don't mind this Ian.
OK, I do realise that it may need a bit of proof reading but it does seem to be reasonably effective because he keeps it near the top of the search engine listings.
I paid Ian £49 for a year's advertising on his site which gives me a page with some text and pictures.
Since I decided to do this at the latter end of '07, I have NOT been deluged with enquiries. However, there has been a steady, slow trickle of phone calls. Some of the jobs I turned down to to poor access.
Currently, as a direct result of that page, I have work that I value at approximately £1,100 per year. It would be more if I provided a monthly servicve like some on here. I have declined other work via that source that I would value at around £400 - £500 per year.
So, not spectacular, but a slow and steady growth.
Apart from the need for a bit of proof reading, I would also say that the site could lead a potential customer to think that the businesses advertising on there are subsidiaries of Ian's business.
So it's not perfect (nor do I expect perfection) but it seems to be working for me. I wouldn't want work to flood in too quickly as it might be a struggle for me to cope anyway. But it does show me that people are more and more inclined to look online for a W/C. It's not necessarily those who you would expect to either. Some of the enquiries have come from pensioners.

That was quite informative shiner, thanks for that. I've always thought that Ian had a good basic idea and strategy, but was a bit shy about being specific on prices.
His site is first rate i've always thought that.
He is always very helpfull on here and gave me a copy of jims mowing etc, and is always offering to help people out.
He's also very good on WC in general and knows about it being loyalty based etc and I admire the straightforward way he controls his bad debts. (i'm saying that in some areas(areas where I struggle)he has a brilliant grasp.)
His achilies heel is not spelling, it's that he thinks people are having a go at him whenever it gets mentioned.

Oh dear. I hope he doesn't think I was having a go about it because that wasn't my intention.
In fact, although it may not appear so at first glance, my post was meant to be complimentary.
I would say that I have obtained about half as much work from Ian's site as I have from Yellow Pages. However, it has been for a small fraction of the outlay.
If anyone is thinking of advertising on Ian's site, I would say give it a try. I took the view that the worst that could happen is losing £49. Whereas I am actually in profit by quite some margin.
I do hope this post encourages a few people to give it a try.
Ian was not aware I was going to post this BTW.
Hope I've presented it in a reasonable manner.
