Title: Dai, advice on b&q pole please!!
Post by: groundhog on May 09, 2008, 09:33:46 am
I looked in my local b&q today and saw the harris pole that Dai uses, it looks great!! and costs less than £15!!!! But before I splash out and part with my cash I wondered if you could tell me Dai what brush you use and how does it attach to the pole? Also have you drilled a hole through the pole to insert the hose? or do you use it with the hose outside the pole?

Cheers  ;)

I have the same pole but I used it for trad work.
It works great but  the problem I have now with it is the top clamp threads have stripped so it doesn't lock up and when pressure is applied the top part of the pole starts to slide down.  Something to bear in mind, although I've had about 12 months use from it before this problem

For £15 it has to be worth a go, if it lasts 6 months it is worth it, I have to go there later to see about a sub pump so will have a quick look.

God bless B&Q pole systems suppliers  ;D - what would we do without all their nationally available bits.
Anyone had a close look at the Wilkinson tools swivel. - just cannot work out how to adapt it. Its in the gardening tools section and swivels differently to anything you have seen. 8)

you get a taper cone that fits them in B&Q you cut half inch of the tip of it, then heat it over a gas stove, until  it starts to melt, very quickly screw into the brush holder, what hapens is it creates a thread, you may have to do it twice, once you screw it in,  run under the cold tap, and then put a screw in to stop it twisting

I have been using this pole for months and I love it.

1] Drill out the rivets or cut the end off.
2]The inside diameter of the end section is exactly the same as the Unger no 2 section, so if you have an old Unger pole you can cut 6 inches off the end piece and it will fit into the Harris pole, if you don't have a piece of Unger, Jeff say's that they sell tube of the right diameter in B&Q.
3] Insert the 6 inch piece into the end of the Harris pole, drill and pop rivet in place
4] Get an Unger threaded cone and angle adapter
5] hold the cone or angle adapter next to the 6 inch inserted piece and note how far down the spring lugs on the adapter are, and mark the spot with a marker pen.
6] Drill through your mark using a 6mm drill bit.

Your pole will now take all standard Unger adapters.

It really is a dead simple job, and you end up with a very light, robust pole that's a delight to use. Dai

Thanks Dai for the great advice, this tip has probably saved me hundreds of pounds as my predator is on its last legs now and I was thinking about getting a carbon pole for a few hundred pounds, but all the time the perfect pole was in B&Q for £15!!!!!!!!  Fantstic!!!  ;D

Making the Harris pole higher.

The no5 section of a Zensorflex, push fits into the base section of the Harris pole after temporarily removing the cap (its stuck on so you need a long screwdriver). This will allow you to stretch the pole by 3.5m if you really need to for not a lot of money. I suggest that its kept vertical when assembling. The Zensorflex can be bought for only £18.99 so an 8.5m pole for only £34

I have resurrected this post especially for my mate Thorpy, it is the best advice I have ever had from this site, and it has also saved me a small fortune!!! Also take note of Jeff brimbles advice on making the Harris pole longer, I haven't tried that yet, but that will be my next project!  ;)

you guys are soooo brilliant.... but i would not know how to do all that... it sounds too complicated.... ::)  to me ;D... whats riveting, and burning a thread on ?.... i couldnt do that as its risky if it goes kaput... but thats me.

Matt they are very light, if you get one buy yourself one of those Stanley paint pads, they make a brilliant swivel and the handle gives just the right working angle.
The actual pad swivels up and down so would be useless, but there is a little screw in the handle that you can take out and turn the handle 90 degrees, just drill a small hole and put the screw back in.
cut off the part of a Bentley brush that the handle screws into, this will leave the top of the brush flat.
Cut the pad holder to fit onto the top of the brush and screw it on with self tappers.
Presto you have an excellent lockable swivel, and the Harris pole will fit into it without any alteration. Dai

Matt, the poles last year had small white collars on them, and there was not enough hand grip on it, now they are 3 times the size, and the design, is much better, especially if your hands are wet

Good pics cybersye, I find it much easier to use with the hose inside the pole Gary! Surely at £15 a time you could afford another one for your trad work!! I thought I was tight, but that is ridiculous!!!!!  ;D
