Title: Sl-x Just picked one up
Post by: Moderator David@stives on April 20, 2008, 06:28:26 pm
First impressions.

The pole feels very robust and the clamps seem bullet proof, It is light and extremely stiff.

It looks like Gardiners have had a fresh new look at pole design and come up with something different.

I think the clamps will need getting used to, but all in all I am quite impressed.

Not paid for it yet, so if its no good I can always post it back  ;D

The clamps should be in an upwards position for ease of use,you can use your index finger to release them then.

Price : Gardiner pole systems.

I can't wait till I can A: Get this pole next week, and B : Buy loads of extensions so I can make a 44ft or 60ft pole. (Only 5ft extension is confirmed now). Probably would be the most rigid pole on the market second to the SL2. :)

errrr.......... hello?

nobody has actually used this pole yet! Who says it's actually any good? theres about 5 people on the forum who swear its a revolution in window cleaning but haven't actually used one!! (i know as they keep posting on cleanitup for Alex to tell them  when they are coming)!!

Please, get some perspective. If the pole is any good all the major suppliers will stock it. Gardiners is a very small operation whose only outlet is using the forums as a customer base. Use your head.........!

I've not bought one yet as it would mean me using credit and I prefer not to do that at the moment.
However, I don't think that an operator's size is anything to do with it as it has had a fair bit of field testing.
Are you intending to stock them yourself if you like them as I know you like to supply quality goods?

Paul, peddling goods to a forum is one thing. Putting the same goods in the open market where they are in professional (i.e. large companies)  hands is something else.

I don't know what arrangements Gardiner's make generally but they do have someone supplying their goods in my neck of the woods (Sussex).  If they have repeated that at various places around the country it could be a useful network I suppose.  I would question whether the distributors actually need to be larger companies though.  In the pre-internet days that might have been essential but the internet can and does help smaller companies market their products in a way that would have been exclusive to bigger companies in years gone by.

Timber,

;D I have never heard of it, let alone know why its so great. I still haven't been told?

I take it its light, do sections come out? is a facelift better?

God there is some ass holes in this world, slagging off the competition, is NOT good business practice  ::)

Steve (Foxman) is actually an OK guy.  While I would agree with him that distribution is important, I question whether things need to be done traditionally (via larger suppliers)due to the marketing potential of the internet.
Just a healthy, differing perspective and no need for name calling.

No problem, it's a 25" Carbon Fibre pole, which at 17" extension is more rigid then a SL2, at 22" it's between a X-tel CF, and the SL2 (Taken from Alex's graphs, of course, it will be tested by many of us if that holds true)

Other specs taken from the website :

Quote
The ultimate pole designed for domestic and light commercial window cleaners. Developed exclusively by us after five years of research and manufactured to our demanding standards.

Enjoy the strength and lightness of Carbon-Fibre with the compactness of a truly versatile pole. Fully telescopic pole with the ultimate strength of high-technology Carbon-Fibre material.

Easily allows you to clean ground floor windows and reach third storey windows with the same pole.

Replaces several different poles at one go.

Meets and exceeds all HSE recommendations.

It has easy action quick-release clamps that allow for low drag extending of each section, low friction section surface allows for super-fast extending/ retracting and minimum wear of each section. Lightweight, compact alloy clamps are stronger and 30% lighter than equivalent plastic/nylon clamps.

Sections can be simply removed if you require a shorter pole.

Reach 29' 9"ft, Actual length 24' 9"(without gooseneck)

Got on good with the pole today, I dont entirely know what to make of it yet as it not like any other pole I have used at this height.
I am used to using clapped out floppy excell poles, this pole is very stiff so I have to change my technique slightly to get used to the handling characteristics.

Held out 90 Degrees there is virtually no bend at all. The pole  feels a similar weight to a 20 ft excell even though the sl-x is 25 ft

The pole feels well engineered.

The only draw back for me, Which is only a slight draw back is the clamps, even though they are well engineered, they feel a bit cumbersome and i  knocked my hands on them occassionally, I suppose they just need getting used to as they operate vertical as opposed to horizontal on the excell, and are completely different to anything i have used before.

They also require more force to opporate than we are used to.

My wife used the pole most of the day and overall she was impressed, the thought of no fibre glass splinters impressed her most

One good thing is that the pole doesnt rely on the clamps as stops for the next section, the clamps stop about an inch or so apart.

The pole is quite expensive, but I suppose all carbon poles are.

The good points about the pole is that the sections are painted red to show where the maximum each pole should be extended, which is something sadly missing on excells as the  the tapes fail and you just have to guess where the ends are.

I found the sections quite easy to remove, just a slight twisting movement managed to remove them even though i was told an allen key was required.

So far I would give this pole 8+ 1/2  out of 10, I would give it 10 if the clamps were less noticeable, not visually but if they required less thinking about.

My wife gave it 9 out of 10.

I hope this gives an honest opinion, dont just rely on what i say though, others might give different opinions.

Do I regret buying this pole ? No

Do I like the price tag ? No

Can I afford it ? Yes, so why not.

Is the pole good ? Yes

Does it perform miracles ? No

After using fiberglass poles when i first started and then switching to a fishing pole was weird at first as there is virtually no bend at domestic height, you do get used to the bend of cheaper poles and they can be used to your advantage, having said that now being used to carbon modulars etc i wouldn`t ever go back to cheaper poles.I saw this pole in prototype form 6 months ago and loved it then.
