It's pot luck if customs decide to open it. You pay your money and take your chance  ;)

if the item cost 30$ then you will pay vat  & import duty on 30$

if it cost 500$ then you will pay vat & import duty on 500$

can you see what I'm getting at? ;)

What you do is get them to mark the package as samples with a nil value.

Hi Susan,
Because the U.S. is a non E.U. country you will have to pay duty if it's new or second hand, you will have to ring customs and excise with the goods and shipping total(they will add the duty on top of everything), and they will tell you what the tarrif is, the first t/m I bought was classed as a carpet cleaner and the duty was 1.5 % but then an ad-valorem duty was added until january 2005 it was increased to 5% and it went up by 1% every month after that! because the E.U. had a falling out with the U.S. to do with them putting duty on E.U. steel being imported to the states.... but don't panic I've just checked and it's been scrapped now, but I'm not sure what the duty has gone back down to?

                                           All the best
                                                             John
