Title: Keep your options open!
Post by: Neil Williams on April 11, 2008, 05:52:36 pm
Quoted an empty commercial the other day, all carpet tiles.
The upstairs a bit on the grubby side, stairs not too bad, reception area totally worn out.
So I says to the rep, "Upstairs not too many problems, stairs no problem, reception area a no go. These need replacing."
So he says, "Do you do that sort of thing"
And like you do in a moment of madness, "Yes of course we do"  ;D
He says, "Can you put that in the quote too"
(So it's clean upstairs, stairs and replace reception)

Off to B&Q price up the cheapest black tiles, glue, knife etc. 25 sq/m max.
Put the quote through with £160 added in for labour of fitting these tiles and straight away got the go ahead.
I reckon I could fit these tiles in less than 3 hours, which is going to be a better hourly rate and a better finish than trying to save some knackered carpet tiles.
Total job worth over £700 with an outlay of £200 in materials.

To be frank , not something i would attempt without the experience .

your reputation could be at stake  if it goes wrong.

A may be simple job ,but i would leave to the correct guys

Many are layed without glueing. just the compactness keeps them down.

You can stick these simply using spray adhesive - just stick the first row then every other row.

Don't forget find your centre line then work back towards each wall.

Hope I am not teaching my grandmother how to suck eggs here.

Why not sub out the fitting for less than £100, carpet fitters I know are quiet at the moment.

I fit carpets, and that includes tiles, as well carpet cleaning.
The only cutting to do on tiles is around the edge, easy enough if you know the techniques in getting the right fit, a bit more awkward when two side need to be cut around architraves etc. Personally I would always stick down in a commercial enviroment. I would never get tiles for this enviroment from B & Q, commercial tiles are required if you dont want to have problems within a short period of time. The other thing is that you will be expected to lift the old tiles first, and then clean the floor before you can begin to fit the new ones, and dont forget one of the most important things is starting the first tile, in the correct place.

Paul

I would be happy to do some form of fitting demonstration at the next one - maybe stretching techniques as there have been a few posts on here lately about using kickers.

Wouldn't be too hard to rig up a board with dummy skirtings to re-create a square room.

Just an idea if anyone was interested  :)
