Title: upvc cleaning fluid
Post by: carpet magic on April 09, 2008, 07:15:19 pm
I wondered if anyone new where I can source some upvc cleaning fluid, not the kind you would buy for domestic purposes. I used some industry stuff a few  years ago but can't find it anywhere now.

Hi

On UPVC (domestically) I always use Brillo Degreaser, works a treat and at about £12 for 5 ltrs, as cheap as chips.

Has never let me down even in smoke filled greasy student pits

2 things.. use CIF (jif) or any white jif type product. (Somerfields own is about 64p) very cheap but works a treat. 2nd find a local plastic building product company (eurocell for example, the sort that sells PVC soffits, gutters, cladding etc,) and they sell PVC cleaner which is solvent based, bit expensive but very good.

You should not clean pvc with abrasive cleaners and the solvants are for removing the glue residues after removing the protective film after installation

If you cannot use solvent and abrasive cleaners  which are made for cleaning upvc what do you use water!

Alkali cleaner is best such as Tfr (non caustic or alloy safe), abrasive cleaners damage the surface which allows the dirt and growth to adhere and reoccur, the solvant breaks down the adhesive from the protective film. If you prefer to be really safe then use caravan cleaner !

Sorry bdcs solvents made to clean upvc wont damage the surface of plastic and plastic with bs standard is the same all the way through the mold ,The surface is like glass due to the perfect surface of the die tool there is nothing that they put on after the manufacturing stage which will give any type of special protection.
Tfr can damage the rubber seals,  Cheap tfr has normaly got caustic in it which will etch the surface of the plastic as will alkline if not diluted to the right dilution rate .
Sometimes plastics need solvent cleaners and cream abrasive cleaners as the plastic is allready damaged,as long as you buy the right product formulated for the very job it was made for you wont go far wrong.

If you read the post I said that you need non caustic Tfr and yes you would dilute it to the correct rate, I would never use any abrasive cleaner on upvc as it will scratch the surface, if you think otherwise then you carry on. We all have our own opinion on whats right whether it is or not is a matter of opinion !!!!!

Sorry bdcs was not having a go just trying to to make clear options as those who have not done work like this before would not know that some tfr has caustic in it and dillution rate is important ,sometimes when the plastic surface is damaged then the only thing to use would be an abracive cleaner  ie if the cills are covered in fallout.
