Hi Everyone
Have just left my job this afternoon to start my own WC round. am nervous as hell but looking forward to it. I've been looking at this site for a few weeks now and finaly made up my mind to go for it as i was so depressed in my job, I got all my equipment on monday and got my ladderers today A pointers wooden, and have been practicing with them at my own home.
I will be out canvasing on Saturday and then again on Tuesday.
I hope i can do a good sell.
any advice will be mostly welcome.

Put some stuff in your profile such as location. It gives people a better grounding to give you advice. However, it does seem a bit hairy. You've left your job, yet you've got no customers ??? A wooden ladder? Check it for woodworm ;D If you are knocking looking for customers, I'd say try to find out who is working there first if anyone. If you want to undercut, that's your choice, but don't do it to get a job. You'll regret it as you sometime will have to put your price up to what they used to pay. And you'll have been undercharging all that time. God luck

sorry mate but depressed or not you really should have tried to build up at least one day a week of work to start with.

Your a brave man but it can be done.
Just canvass everyday for a month you will soon have enough work.

Personally, I would have kept the old job and canvaassed work before quitting. Bills still need to be paid. Dreams aspire you to go out and get the work but they don't pay the bills. Good luck with getting some w/c work. Remember failure cannot live with persistency.

try n find part time job .untill u get enough custie s too pack it in .it ll olso keep dole people off ur back .thats what i did .

Hi Guys
Thanx for all the advice, I have been doing some canvasing over the past month on saturdays and managed to get some customers, I have bought a new wooden ladder A pointer and it seems alot sturdier that the aluminium ladder that i've already got. and got it manufactured at a good price.
I plan to hit the streets hard on sat and tuesday and every day from then, I won't under cut my self as i know it will be hard to put up prices in the future.
I will let you know how things go next week. wish me luck

Good luck! it's going to snow the weekend. You'll have to doorknock like mad Saturday 'cos by tues most people will be back to work so you'll be knocking empty houses. I hope you have a few bob to tide you over.

Just do it, you will make mistakes - boy will you make mistakes - but you will learn so much and so quickly.
Once you have your first customer you are a window cleaner.
Never give up and never get disheartened. There will be times when you want to chuck it all in but just think "If those plonkers on clean it up can do it then so can I"

Just keep canvassing and when you get the work do a good job, you'll be fine. :)

I havnt been going for to long,but seem to have a growing number of customers.
When i started it was November and i think a lot of people were not bothered about having clean windows,but now in March i get new customers nearly every day and i have made myself some good flyers to attract them.

Ask all your family and friends to ask there family and friends, knock on everyones door in your street, put a sign in your vehicle with contact details, any customers you get, you will have the time to do a top job, so do it, and then ask them to ask their family and friends.
Go on vista print and order some business cards, they are free for 250, just pay £3 postage,
Any opputunity you see, go for it, if you dont ask, you dont get.
Good luck,
Oh and go on ebay and get some polo shirts and jumpers with your details on the back, looks pro and its all advertising, even when you are stood in the shop at teatime, someone will ask you.

if I were you, if your canvassing during the day dont go to the "well off areas" as they will probably be at work to pay for there big house.
If you are canvassing between 9am - 4pm then you need to hit the council estates. You will get more people in in these areas at this time.
Then spend your evenings targeting the better off areas.
Oh, and if you get 90% of people in the street say they already have a window cleaner, dont waste anymore time and go to a different street altogether.

I can remember agonising about starting w/c with Graham.
I had left a good job for another which didn't work out. We talked about it for months but finally got started just like you.
Now three years later we have two vans and two lads, got faster using waterfed poles and have built up a nice round which is growing all the time. I should say that the info and help available here is fantastic. I am very grateful to all on here. Remember it will take time. But if you present yourself in a nice friendly and easygoing manner, are honest and reliable, do a good job you are half way there. Your good name is your biggest asset.

And thanx for all the advice. and must i say that it has helped me loads, I was thinking whislst i was out today in the snow just how hard this is but in the back of my mind thought of u guys.
I managed to get around 50 customer today I'm really pleased ' must have felt sorry for me in the snow'
Will be going out againTues to.
I'm lucky that i have a partner who will support me whilst i'm starting, I've been given a year to bring the money in that i was perviously earning, 'oh no lol' I have 4 months holiday to be payed for so that will help.
I have orded my Business cards and got my self magnetic adverts for my car, a polo shirt with my business name printed on and all the insurance.
