Title: Couple of quick questions
Post by: Village Gleam on March 20, 2008, 07:16:21 pm
1. Is it okay to work tomorrow, good friday or it bad form?

2. Those end caps on conservatory roofs that are always missing. Where do I get them from, and is replacing them at £5 each a good idea,

Don't work Bank Holidays. Makes you look needy to passers by, not good for your image. Not good for your family if they take second place in your life as well. Take a well earned rest and have a day off. The customers will understand.

I have 3 first cleans for tomorrow, but the majority is free (gonna leaflet / canvass)

Will also do leaflets / canvass on Saturday and Monday.  Monday is a normal working day for me.

I cant see how it makes you look needy, I have a business to run,
millions of other people will be working tomorrow we are no different, I feel people just make up an excuse not to work (and I am not knocking you or anyone for doing it) I used to when I worked for someone else

Cant travel anywhere cos the motorways are gridlocked , and anywhere you take the family is always dearer than normal days !     Work the holiday days , then take the family on a fun day out on the non holiday day and save a few quid !

Some customers are offended when a tradesman turns up on their doorstep unannounced on a bank holiday. They make not say anything to you because they are being polite but it does offend some.
How would you feel if you had relatives coming to visit from a long distance. You have planned hosting and entertaining your friends and some tradesman turns up on your door unnanounced ruining your plans, not ideal is it?
If you are happy working a bank holiday doing domestic work then good for you. If it was commercial work, that's a different matter.
I would never ever dream of doing domestics on a bank holiday. It's the best excuse to have the day off. Work to live, not live to work.

When you say long distance , how far are they travelling ?  What if  they dont get on and there is a long awkward silence ?    You turn up and are doing your stuff and they comment " wow that guy is good " Imagine the possibilties ? ........... !

That's the right attitude IMO.  :)

Some of you lot would work 7 days a week if you could (probably do  ;))

Depends where you live Mr Sol, plenty of suppliers for finials, end caps etc etc.

Bad form unless its commercial.

If doing domestics make sure you phone before you arrive, dont turn up unannounced.

true
but the difference with a lot of other businesses is the customer chooses to go to them on a holiday, shops resturants etc.. easter holidays and the like are times for family get togethers and most people would prefer not to see their window cleaner through the windows in their garden at such times (well I know I would'nt)

I have work coming out of my ears  and behind as usual because of the dreadful weather  but would rather die than call on people to clean , anyway always prefer it when they are out as can get done quicker. If some of you cannot earn enough to take the time off you are doing something wrong seriously

I have just come back from holiday and the last thing I really need is another right now (even though I could do with 2 weeks right now)

No way do i do domestics on bank holidays, anybody working bank holidays needs the money no matter how they try and dress it up.At any holiday time numptyody wants you round to clean there window`s,they might seem like they don`t care but they probobly think your desparate for the cash rather than taking time off and doing something with your family, lifes to short.

Is that a hard no or a soft no.

I had to laugh when I read Waynes strap line..... the 5th emergency service 365 days a year, 24 hours a day...... but not sundays bank holidays during Jeremy Kyle...

Job I am doing have mastic guy in tuesday morning, my work has to be done, I dont need to work monday if I dont want to, but I am not letting down a job just because it's a bank holiday. I worked friday aswell I wanted the money to right I did.

People keep banging on about doing things with family ect this is not aimed at you NWH just a statment ok.

If you have to wait for bank holidays just to spend time with your family you are doing something wrong. If I choose to have a holiday it will be when I want one not when I am dictated to do so this is one of the reasons I started my own business.

there is always to side to every story so NWH you could be wrong about your statment m8  ;)

I only put it in for a laugh. You won't catch me working 300 days a year.

Spot on Ian  ;D  working bank holidays is working smarter !  You arnt paying over the odds for visitor attractions , stood still on motorway carparks .    But taking another day off in the week instead is so much more relaxing  ;D .  Funny when you are cleaning on bhols how relaxed you feel .
