Title: Boring resin question

What's it made of? Spilt a little on the kitchen laminate floor and the grains reflect in the dark - little golden balls of Dowex gleaming in the joints.

they are polystyrene.

polystyrene as you're probably thinking of it is aerated, this gives it its thermal insulating properties.  It also decreases the relative density of the polystyrene.

Think of it like bread which floats, squeeze all the air out of it and it sinks
