Title: Brakes
Post by: lands on March 16, 2008, 10:32:25 am
My breaks just started scraping yesterday so I have been to quick fit this morn and they said to bring back in morn but pads will be 60-80 and discs 100-200 (depending on which ones it needs. Gutted as well skint but thought that seemed quite high. Does it?

Hi Pete

In my experience Quick Fit are expensive and will look for other things which are 'wrong'

Time you found a good local mechanic.

Cheers

Doug

You are clearly enlightened where I am not but feel free to share it and if its offensive I don't bruise very easily.

Go to a boot fair in the summer, you will get loads of spanners etc really cheap.

Nothing personal Pete, but with so many posts moaning about price shoppers etc, the irony of your post rather highlights the reality of life, at least it does for me.

Yes it does seem expensive and " local " garage would probably do it for half of that amount..........

good luck

rob

We had three vehicles going through servicing / MOTs over the past week at a cost of £1200. The worst of these was a little Citreon C3 ...................first service £340. ( included 2 tyres )

on the subject of tools..............don't buy cheap ones, they won't last.

The first service was FREE until recently

Pete, brake pads and discs are probably the easiest job to do on a car or van. It may be daunting if you haven't done it before and it is a chew on especially if you have to do it outside.
There must be some little back street garages round your neck of the woods, just call in to a few, this is bread & butter work for them and what keeps them ticking over. You never know you may find one thats willing to barter and do it for having his carpets cleaned. I do that all the time and have ended up with a class group of plumbers, sparkies, mechanics etc. We help each other out and although it all isn't free it doesn't work out full price.

Last year, I had a similar problem on my Citroen Dispatch. Talking to a trusted colleague who has a much better understanding than I do about these matters, he told me that manufacturers were pressured into replacing the asbestos content of brake pads/linings with someting more "friendly". The modern alternatives perform as well but unfortunately, the wear rate on pads but more especially discs, is greater. Discs lasting less than 20k, dependent on driving style, is not uncommon.

I paid £200ish for new front discs and pads with an Authorised Citroen Dealer.

BEWARE  New pads and discs can take upto about 50 miles to bed in and attain maximum feel and power.  If you do it yourself, from my experience with bikes, get some brake cleaner and keep those brake pistons immaculately clean.

Safe and happy braking :)
Ken

Pads £15 & discs £25 each from motorist discount shop would take about 1 hr to do if you were not so far away I would have done them for you.

I took my van to ATS to have the brakes done. The next day i heard a rattling noise from the engine and took it to my local mechanic. He phoned me and said one of his testers had almost crashed my van, ATS hadnt attached the hose and it had been rubbing on the tyre and rubbed right through just as the tester took it out and he had complete brake failiure. ATS sent someone to the garage to sort it...the rattling I had heard was the nut the ATS guy hadnt refitted to the brake hose.

Do all my own mechanical stuff ! bit of a car nut to boot,i restored an old ford zephyr when i was 19 building a vw scirocco at the mo for road and trackday fun.All self taught as never been flush enough to pay others to do it,although it`s been sat on my drive for 2 years now just waiting for the spare £ to get the alloy racing fuel cell to go in the boot and high pressure injection lines making up.have upgraded all the brakes and suspension brakes are pretty straight forward, can`t go wrong with a manual and net

they charged me £60 as well for the front on my T5 VW wanted £120 so though KWIKY BRAKES was a bargin, took them 30 mins and was on my way.

IT all depends on your POV really, could have got the pads and DIY''d it for £25 but rather clean a carpet and stay dust free.

Guys in KF all very helpfull and put us to font of the queue when we have as emergency, had 8 punctures repaired for free, in last year and two exhaust patched up till they can get the part in to fix them. They probably have saved me as much as they charged.
