Title: Leaflet Drops - DIY or Agency ?
Post by: Richard Edwards on December 14, 2004, 03:18:54 pm
Hello everyone

Before I start on this subject, I am aware that it has been covered previously, but I have tried following the threads listed under FAQ, and keep being sent back to the Home Page. So apologies if I`m covering old ground.

My marketing is mainly based around leaflets, and as a newbie I have been posting leaflets most days for the last 3 weeks.

On this and other Forums I have seen figures of 4000 leaflets per week being delivered, is this DIY or are people using agencies ?

At present I have time, but as the business builds time will get less, and  I don`t see how I can keep up the volume of leaflets without using an agency.

Can anyone give me an idea of the cost of using an agency ?

Also how many leaflets do you send out a month, and do you change your leaflet content every month ?

All comments welcome.

Cheers  :)

£25 + VAT per 1000.  Delivered with three other leaflets from different businesses.  If it works then dont change it.

For me, this time round, it hasent worked.

Leaflet delivery firm will charge any thing from £38 -£78.00 plus VAT per thousand for solus delivery. :o

Like Doug I suggest your source some local people and pay them to do your deliveries at around £25-30.00 per thousand. It a terrible job so don't begrudge paying some one what they are worth.Thats around £6 an hour depending on close the properties are to each other.

Local free paper will charge around £16.00 per thousand but you will go in with all the other leaflets.Solus if deffinately better.

it takes 6 hrs to deliver 1000 leaflets, if you can get some one to work for £25 for 6 hours work then great.

you can't do it yourself because it wil bore the ars*e of you ;) and you'll never keep it up.

you need to do a minimum of 4000 a week, every week.

I have been shoving things through peoples letter boxes for mote years than I care to remember.

I66 leaflets per hour is pushing it. ie 1000 leaflets in six hours acording to my calculations  Whilch equates to a leaflet through a door every 26 seconds aprox.

This in my humble opinion might be achievable over a short period in a row of terrace houses. But quality homes with driveways I think not.

I would like a little bit of realiasim in this as at The Carpex seminar a simillar asumption was qouted and if not correct puts us in danger of paying less than minimum wage.

On Sunday I think I and my helper averaged about 200 an hour  ie 100 an hour each delivering to non terraced quality homes, and bearing in mind in villages there is a need to move from area to area.

The type of person required for leaflet drops is a fit retired person.

If anyone would like to submit any further evidence I personally would find it useful in setting a realistic rate for the job.

I am also looking into finding one or two non competing tradesman  who would like to share costs with me. Bearing in mind sorting three leaflets will slow down delivary team.

Mark I believe about a year ago you aquired a Marketing manual which would have included 30000 plus leaflets a year to a defined area as a marketing stratergy although from this and previous posting you are disapointed with your return this time are yousatisfied with leaflets overall?

Ian I base my 1000/6hrs on personel experiance, when i employed a young lad I'd pick him up at 8am and we'd put leaflets out for 1hr every morning before going to the first job at 9.30.

we'd also do on average 30mins extra sometime throughout the day this equates to 3hrs a day. most days we'd get around 500 out.

I had set housing estate  which we did ( nice houses, plenty of money but not too up-market - Mondeo drivers :)) and they would be done on a reguler basis ( every 3 weeks)

26 seconds sound like a short time but new  3 bed semi-detatched house are easy to walk betreen and doing it an hour at a time maximises speed ( if you know your only doing an hour you don't get disheartened)

but like you say houses with big driveways are a different story, so we avoided them ;)

Hi Mike you are leaner than me.

Also you can sustain pace for an hour but maybee not six.

All I am asking is that forum members carry out their own work study over a variety of houses.

When i was out just now I was taking 35 seconds per house.

That was without stopping for a drink. And as some smoke that time comes into the equation.

Also folding leaflets.

Happy Xmas

i didnt realise , that folding the leaflets takes time  :-\ :-\
i fold mine as soon as i posted first, next already in hand and getting folded ready for next letter box,
to work out how many your posting on average, I personally count the houses
you have posted  in, take note of time you start, pick a number  "say 200"
after you have posted 200 look at the time . hey presto you have your count per hr.
well it works for me  ;)

You have to get some one to do it for you, to discipline your self to do it week in week out would surley fail.

Taken on Mikes figures 16000 leaflets delivered a month on an a good average solus price of £38 a 1000 = around £608 a month. Delivery over 12 months would cost you £7296 a year or £20 a day   :o in labour. Thats a cheap price to pay for potential major gain (eventually).

i spend about £5000 a year on leaflet printing & delivery (£100 a week) this keeps me working 6 days a week.

I've been doing this for years, I'm not stupid if it was'nt worth it I would'nt do it ;)

but I've often thought if I spent £5k on a Y/P would I get more work

Mike,

Thats why I deliver leaflets If I have got to walk for health I might aswell try to earn some dosh.

Geoff  mine are A4 which I print on an old copy printer.

I prefer them foldrd but i do have a machine that does that but not everybody will as they invest in cleaning toys and forget about marketing toys.
