Been trading 10years. Got ads in Thomson and a half page ad in 2 yellow pages. I send reminder cards out every month. I give out business cards like confetti. Also give out fridge magnets with number on. Got leaflets in dispensers in various places and i get nothing but praise from satisfied customers. But I'm so quiet it getting crazy. Got 2 jobs this week. Every week since new year i've barely broken even. Still beats working for a living though lol. But it is getting beyond a joke.

been a quite start here too, but have faith, it'll soon pick up
March has started really quite busy, hope it continues
-
Jan and Feb average but now its dead. So time to catch on the DIY and all other 'put off jobs'.
-
absolutely dead
-
Pretty dead at mo got a few jobs boked for next week,1 job and 1 quote tomorrow .Find i start the week off with empty diary ,then by the end of the week i have just about made enough.like Karl says catch up with the stuff that needs doing that keeps getting put off, vacing out the van planting my veggies mowing the half acre of lawn. :(
-
pretty slow too, think the poor weather has some thing to do with it, so should pick up soon.
-
No Calls this week as of yet which is strange. Pleanty of work this week and a few next but have not booked any new jobs this week yet.
Does worry me but then it can change just as quickly though.
-
Gives you time to get some exercise with a long days brisk walking pushing those flyers through.
Dave.

It really is a funny old game, Great Jan, Feb was a lot better than I thought it was going to be ( but not fantastic ) and March is looking very good...... so far!
Justin

Same here guys. Jan and Feb better than last year but it has gone very quiet. I have only 2 jobs this week and one next week.
I have not known it so quiet. I have also put out 50,000 leaflets in the last 6 weeks.
So remember not to beat yourselves up as its not you.
For most it is quiet.
-
Booked solid for the next two weeks which is a rare thing these days at any time of the year.
Have no idea why either as i find March the quiet month of the year.
Having said that 90% of this work is repeat and referral. New business is quiet.

Mark good on you 8). Make hay and send some of that good fortune over this way ;)

I would say new business is quiet but repeat customers and work through letting agents and office carpets via an office cleaning business are keeping us well and truely going.
There are some 'Price shoppers' calling which are 99% of the time a waste, take today for example.
Wife: "Good afternoon Willclean"
Cust: "Can I have a price for a bedroom" (Here we go do you want it painted, cleaned or built)
Wife: "Can I take a name please?"
Cust: "Why do you want that?" (Here we go)
Wife: "Because if I give you a price and you call back I'll know who i was speaking to"
Cust "I don't see why I should give you my name" (No point in asking for the address then is there)
Wife: "there's nothing funny involved but it helps to know who I'm talking to.
Cust: "Well I don't want to tell you my name I just want a price" (God help us if we ever got to the point of asking size, age , colour etc)
Wife: "Well this is clearly going nowhere so goodbye" AND PHONE DOWN ;D
I know some of you will think why turn down possible work, but if a conversation starts off like this then there's no hope that the rest will go well.
-
Great start but last two weeks ticking over only :-\
-
Must be my magic touch, I'm inundated with only a little space for next week infact I've just had my best Feb ever and the days I worked in Jan they all grossed well so happy days at the moment.

Don't worry Paul, just means that the Krug is on Shaun on the 7th. Have asked venue to order some and given Shauns details for invoicing.
I figure about 50 heads = 9 bottles at 6 flutes full per and at £90 per bottle. Unless your pallets lean more towards a Dom Perignon (which I personally think is over rated) at about the same price.
-
You have got more chance of Bill Turton turnin gay than you have of getting Ashmore to pay for that.
-
I thought Billy was gay?
Shaun
-
You 2 are only saying this because you know he's probably too knackered from Sunday to come and sort you out. Me I'm just too much of a coward to say it at any time. ;D
-
Billy deserves all of the praise he can get very well deserved.
But I'm still not buying any champers, you lot will think I'm going soft in my old age (38 on Thursday so cards and private cheques sent to my special PO Box)
Shaun
-
Well if Billy is as you say then I'm sure he'll put something in your special box ;D
-
Nothing will get up there as I'm a Yorkshireman and it's as tight as a ducks rs.

Hi Guys
Back to the original question , you make no mention of an internet presence.
I've got a big one and I've been busy all year ;)
Cheers

Doug,
I am about to revamp my crap website, but I am getting conflicting advice from my website designer.
How do people find you?
My web enquiries come via the website button on my Yell.com listing, but are you of the opinion that most potential customers Google 'Carpet cleaners in Timbuctu' (or whatever)?
Do you have to work quite hard at keeping your web listing on the first search page. I am thinking that beyond page 1 or 2 it is a waste of time.

Had yahoo on the phone yesterday offering me top spot on yahoo local £400,after going through my referrer details yahoo.co.uk did not even appear most comes from google 49.7%
-
Its definitely Geographical. Even when I was using Google adwords (ie paying) Yell.com beat it hands down.
-
Dead round these parts too... Booked 5 jobs in the last 2 weeks, and only a couple for next week.
Thank god I have the general cleaning side of the business, as it is the only thing paying the bills at the moment.
Have faith tho, sure it will pick up, convinced that the weather is playing a big part.

Bugger ,went and priced up a house today 2100 sq ft came out over £500.
They are moving to a huge barn conversion and will be renting the house out so they aint broke by any standard. She then went around house knocking rooms off saying this does not need doing , that does not need doing ect ect so had to measure the ones she did want doing again gave her the much reduced price of £140.She then asked if i would knock anymore off for cash ! there is a reason why people with money hang on to it ,cos they a tight gits !

Wouldn't bother with the oven cleaning, went to clean h/s/l last week at 10am, there was a guy there cleaning the oven got talking to him he had been there since 8.30. we both got done and packed away for 11 o clock and both got our cheques at the same time. I got £55.00 for the hour, he got £40.00 for the 2 1/2 hours up to the eyeballs in grease, if this is the going rate is it worth it. Is he cheap or is this the going frate ive no idea?
Mark
