Title: Why won't he do conservatories
Post by: jeff1 on March 01, 2008, 05:39:57 pm
I had a phone call today from one of my custy's asking me to do her conservatory roof next week when I'm due call, she then went onto ask if I could do the whole conservatory including the roof of one of her friends, who is not one of my customers, I asked why she only wanted the conservatory done and not her house at the same time?
She told me that her regular w/c does not do conservatories and that includes just the sides?

Why on earth won't this Guy do the glass is beyond me, there is good money in conservatories, any guy's out there that won't touch any part of a conservatory? if so Why don't you touch them? I'm baffled.

Won't it look funny If I'm there doing her conservatory and her regular w/c turns up, I have no intentions of taking another guy's work from him but if its who I think it is, then I will push for the house, just to releave this dole bum from one of his Jobs.

This actually happened with me.  I did a conservatory roof (and window above it) for an ex customer who sacked me when I was long term sick.  I was light on work and business is business after all and at least he did the right thing by writing to me to let me know.  I charged him well for it  ;D   .While I was doing it, two window cleaners started walking around on the tiles next door (another place where I got sacked for the same reason).  Fortunately I do know them.  We had a laugh about it.  I even said "Well they were my customers first".

I do a few like this, the main thing is that the cleaner they have has been cleaning their windows for some years now and is trad & nearing retirment and they find it to much for them, now the customer wanting to stay loyal (what we all like) keeps the old cleaner on for the house and calls me to do the con, gutters etc, i have meet their reg cleaner and we get on really well.

Strange isn't it what people will put up with. I took on a temporary job the other day (don't ask) the frames were brown from years of neglect although she pays to have her windows cleaned. I got my upvc cleaner out and did the lower frames as i always do with any new clean and gave all the rest a good scrub with my brush. Came up like new. People put up with these rubbish cleaners, god knows why. There is a pretty new estate near me that i havn't managed to crack yet - not one, and it has the filthiest frames and doors i have ever seen they all have their windows cleaned by some company thirty miles away.

When we were all cleaning trad, many of us under priced conservatories because they were easy to do without a ladder. I myself have been guilty of this.
When I converted to WFP, I soon realised that windows on the ground floor were no advantage.
The amount of time spent doing conservatories compared to the rest of the house changed.
When climbing time had been taken out of the equation, I found myself out of sync time wise.
The conservatory was taking as long to do as the house, I was only getting £4 more for a con on a £10 job.
I told many of my customers that I could no longer do their conservatories at the old price. I gave them option of paying the higher price, or they could do the conservatories themselves,
many chose to do this, of course many of them never get round to doing them, and rather than ask me to start doing them again, would prefer someone else did them on a one off basis.
This may well be the same on for the job you were asked to do. Dai

When I was Trad I always did the conervatory if asked to do so by the custy, I also did the con roofs but I have a 10' wfp to fit to the custy's outside tap to do the roofs with, I priced a conservatory the same as I would price a house, if they wanted all the upvc cleaned then that was a different price, so even Trad i did all the work and made good money on them, I even  used to ask custy's if the wanted them cleaned.
Some had them done every time others as and when they wanted, so there price was higher, same as the con roofs, some every time and some as and when.
I do think if there under priced you tend not to want to do them when you turned up, any customer I had like this I would bite the bullet and tell them of my new price increase, most of them were fine about it and excepted the new price the odd couple didn't like the new pricing structure, no skin off my nose, there charged more when they do have it cleaned.

I'll do just the con if its worth it? if its the dole bum I'm thinking of, then I will push for the whole Job, he gets dole money I don't :'( if he's a genuine w/c then I won't take his work.

I didn`t mean i would nick the job off of him but i wouldn`t just do certain window`s,if they didn`t want me to do everything i`m saying i wouldn`t bother,i would`t be messed around by people that want this 1 done and that 1 left.

i got someone email me from my website, and only wanted the conservatory cleaning, for a one off, they can be good pay. Their old window cleaner used to do the windows for £6 i said they could have them done, but for £10. They said they will 'ponder' over having this done.

I never read it as you would pinch his work  ;D i understood what you meant, I just meant that if he's the dole dosser I would pinch it, if not, I'll do just the con if they want a regular wash, could be worth more than the house alone and normally is, I have no intensions of doing the odd window above the conservatory, unless again its a regular Job.
well we know what were saying to each other, even if no one else does  ;D ;D

Now for a one off Jon, were talking very good money, I always give my custy's this option, if they want a one off clean as and when  they want one, then the price rockets up, if its a regular clean, I charge the first clean price, then a regular clean price, when they get there one off clean price I watch closely  for there eye's popping out  ;D ;D

I took over some customers where a window cleaner had fallen off a ladder and had to pack in work because of his fall. I raised all his prices a bit, BUT the prices he had charged for the conservatories were a real joke. I told the customers what the new price would be and most of them just have them done at the beginning of spring and end of summer at my new, more sensible price. I TFR them and power wash them all as it's quicker than hot WFP, as they are only done every 6 months plus, in leafy, gusty located suburbs, so always covered in green moss.  A lot of these big conservatories can take longer than the house to clean, so the price reflects the time taken, not how many panes of glass there is. Roofs are the worst, not my favourite job, but it's a job that keeps the customers happy so I do them at the right price.
