Hi. I run a domestic cleaning business in Swindon, Wilts. The business is operated by my wife and I and at present we employ one other person (aim to expand to approx 4 employees by Spring 2005). We have up until now avoided the issue of insurance, but now we are beginning to employ people we feel it to be essential. I wonder therefore if anyone out there can recommend any company who provide affordable employer and public liability insurance. I have been given quotes so far ranging from £550-£800. Is this the norm or can more reasonable premiums be found. Any advice appreciated. Many thanks, Gary, Bettakleen (Swindon, UK)

hi there,
i would grab it, we pay in excess of £1600 but we have a lot of additions to our cover, loss of keys etc, sub contractor cover, hired in plant.
just make sure that you have adequate cover, so that then you can just concentrate on running the business, and reviewing insurances annually, as opposed to have to keep checking or updating throughout the year.

I've got mine thro Groupama (via the internet)....£65.00 per year for 1 mill public liability and £140.00 per year per person for 10 mill employer's liability. I can add people to the policy as an when I need to at a pro rata rate (of course). There are exclusions of course but none that effect the business......I believe it isn't too bad a deal

I'm also in a position where I am starting to look at insurance for setting up a carpet cleaning business, it seems to be on a £100-200 as long as you're not covering the actual carpet you're working on. Seems the companies I have spoken to dont want to cover me for items worked on.
Is this normal?? I don't think I'd want to go into anyones house and work on their carpet if I wasn't insured to pay for it in case a mistake was made.
How do the rest of you guys operate?
Cheers
Chris.

Hi
they won't insure you on what you are working on as they consider you professional enough not to damage it, you are only covered for indirect damage.
It's a cop out.
Thoughts?
