Do Di bottles only work properly if they are in an upright position?

I am working on a trolley/carriage system that will allow me to slide 2 ('in-line') Di bottles out of my van and onto customer's premises - so that I can connect to their domestic water supply.

However, while the trolley/carriage system is in the van connected to to my water tank, it would be in a 'laid down' position with the Di bottles in a 'laid down' position also (horizontal instead of vertical).

Would they still do the job, or could there problems (water short-circuiting the resin, for instance)?

, i have never tried the vessel on its side, but can not see any reason why it would not do the same funtion,
