Title: Reciprocal links
Post by: davep on February 26, 2008, 11:07:34 am
I have redone my site so as its not in flash format as i was advised the search engines would skip it, now i am looking at seo'ing it.

I have seen people on here using Reciprocal  links, do these actually work as reading up on it tells me they do and dont  ???

Ta,

Dave

Thanks Spencer, how does it improve ratings or is it complex, do people need to click on the links or does them just being there do the trick?

Recip links should push you up the lisitings, its also important to have a link coding

posting a link http://www.sdccleaning.co.uk is not a great deal of use, a good link coding will look a bit like this

Carpet Cleaning Brighton & Hove,Uckfield,Lewes,Crowborough, Battle,Tunbridge Wells, East Sussex (http://www.sdccleaning.co.uk/) - Eastbourne, East Sussex based Carpet Cleaning & Upholstery Cleaning Company, offering Eco Carpet Cleaning Services, covering Eastbourne, Hastings, Brighton, Lewes, Seaford and Tunbridge Wells.

Hello Paul, I think that other business has been put to bed now  8) I still had a little chuckle to myself this morning.

I did drop the NCCA a line too.

Can any body tell me in very easy terms who you do this. I thought you just put the web site name on a links page but that does not seem to be the case.

Paul it depends on how you put your site together, mine is a template and has an option to  'insert your own code'

Thanks lads, while i'm here, who knows about meta tag key words.  Not too sure how they work but i know i have too many.

Did an analysis thingmeebob and it told me..

We will only search for the first 15 keywords in your meta tags. Keywords beyond the first 10 are unlikely to affect your listings at all. Therefore, the first 10 should be your most important.'

How can you compress to 10 words?   :'(

My web guy and a guide i am reading, tell me Metas have little relevance these days but ask Mark Roberts hes the expert.

every search engine uses different algorithms to rank your site, google use a number of different algorithms which they alternate, which is why it is harder to consistently rank well on google.

the main rules they look at are.

one way links
reciprocal links
Keyword density(should be 2-4%)
site title
page title
site age
how up to date your site is
ranking of the sites linking to you

Links from related sites are worth more than any old random link, infact google have started penalizing sites that have to many random links.

keep your links pages to no more than 100 links per page

links from .gov sites are worth more as the engines see these as important sites and therefore if they are linking to you then you will be seen as an important site.
(the same reason it`s better for you if you can get high ranking sites linking to you)

try to make each page relevant to the page title, ie. carpet cleaning page ensure your keywords carpet, carpets, upholstery etc are of a higher density on that page than anywhere else on your site.

The engines can`t see pictures but they do read the file names of them so name all your pics using your keywords, remember to keep them relevant to the page they are going on.

make a site map and upload it to the same ftp folder that contains your site files.

Don`t pay for links, as again google is penalizing sites that use link farms.

Don`t worry if you don`t rank anywhere for the first few months as your site will be "sandboxed" some engines wait until your site is of a certain age 3-6 months before ranking it.

Register your site with DMOZ and alexa directorys.

I think that is prob enough for the minute, although it is vital to keep maintaining your site or else if you neglect it (as i have for the last few months) you will lose your ranking very quickly (as i have) ( temporarily )

However you have built your site you can always access your ftp folder by typing your web address and replacing the http://www. with ftp://ftp.(yoursite.com)

it will come up asking for your username and password this will normally be the same as the ones you use to access what ever site building program you are using.

once you have looged into your ftp you will see a number of folders find the one that contains your website files, find the one for the page you want to work on and right click it, select copy to folder or desk top. then right click the copied folder and select edit using notepad and a page will open containing the html source code for that page from here you can add whatever snipets of code you want, save the file and then drag and drop it back into your ftp folder.

Do one way links work, say to a big site like ebay?

Also is it ok to use 3 words like 'liverpool carpet cleaners' or are 1 word like carpet, upholstery better?
Title: Re: Reciprocal links
Post by: Cleaning Resource on February 28, 2008, 08:11:04 am
Links are only good if the site is linking to you, not just you linking to them.
a good way to get one way links(just the other site linking to you, you not linking back to them)these type of links are worth most, is to put it on sig strips for forums like this one, although some do use "no follow" tags which stops the crawlers but most don`t. Also create blogs and also internal links (thats links on your own site linking to another page your own site) these would be just your normal navigation links will help. fill in peoples guest books on their sites and put a link on there for your site.

for keywords you can use, one word, two word or three word phrases, you don`t want to go above three words.

Keywords and search engines..  how do they recognise plurals for example?  Would i need to put in carpet cleaner, carpet cleaners or just one of?

Talking of links anyone any idea why when i ran a check for incoming links Yahoo gave me 70 and Google 0  ???
Title: Re: Reciprocal links
Post by: spencer davies on February 28, 2008, 05:59:34 pm
Art,

Its when you exchange links with owners of multiple sites, you give him two free inbound links for two of his sites for example, he will give you a trade off two non reciprocal links on another two sites that he owns. Inbound one way links supposedly being better than recips.

I have done a little bit of reading about it recently.

I am confused i think i will go out and buy SEO for Dummies or maybe check out Ad words. What sort of monthly budget would you need for say a 10 Mile radius adwords campaign?

Google stopped displaying all your links some time ago but...

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/siteoverview?pli=1

use that to find them.

forget 3 way links, the result if any is minuscule

Title: Re: Reciprocal links

3 way links are, as i think has already been explained but i`ll have a go too.

You link your site to someone elses, they then link back to you from a different site that they own. Therefore creating a one way link for you and a one way link for them. As one way links are better for your rankings, then yes 3 way linking is better.

Plural terms need to be entered as separate keywords.

The reason it shows more links from yahoo than it does from google is because yahoos algorithims are not as complex as googles, google is the biggest search engine because it uses such complex algoriths so as to ensure that it only returns the most relevant search results to it`s customers, it therefore does not return as many search results, as the less relevant ones have been filtered out by the algorithms. Where as yahoos less complex algorithms filter out less and therefore return more results.
Title: Re: Reciprocal links
Post by: Mark Roberts on March 01, 2008, 02:38:10 am
What you have just described is a triangular link,  a->c and b->a, you can also do  a->b, b->c and c->a, its gamesmanship, so if you value your rankings why risk being kicked off or receiving a penalty when getting the no1 spot with the right methods is straight forward? Dont forget a one way link is not always better, it depends where its coming from.

Mr Gleam I dont get your last paragraph? In the old days in google you could find all your links by typing link:http://www.cleanitup.co.uk for example, in an effort to stop people manipulating rankings and caring so much about links it simply stopped showing them and just shows a selection now(there still in google), showing links is a separate thing to showing search results.
